Oozing Confidence!
It seems apparent than Lum Harris of the Atlanta Braves has
that oozing confidence in Earl Williams, the big Braves rookie.
The fact that Williams played four different positions for the
Braves this season points to that degree of confidence that the
Braves manager must have in his rookie’s ability. He s a
“COMER” and Harris and the Braves front office are not the only
ones who feel that way.
Recently Williams has been doing some catching for the team.
He made a number of mistakes (and that was expected), but he
has done reasonably well and Harris seemingly knbws that. He has
kept him behind the plate when it appeared that experience
should have been considered. Certainly the knuckle ball of Phil
Niekro is a pitch that one would think an experienced catcher
should handle. Williams did a good job of handling Niekro
Monday night against the Expos.
Since Williams is young, big and strong, he’ll probably be
around for the Braves for a number of seasons. His ability to play
thirdbase, firstbase, the outfield and catch, all of which he has to
learn to do more ably, makes him a potential Braves star. Also his
hitting will be a key factor, as has been proven in several games
this season. B
Coleman No-Hits
Savannah Cubs Divide
Last Sunday at Coleman Field, Henry Coleman, hard-throwing
pitcher for the Augusta Cubs, breezed through the ranks of the
visiting Savannah Rebels to record an 8-0 no-hit victory. Backing
up the stellar mound performance of Coleman with the timely
stickwork were Chris Hendrix and Bobby Cummings with two
singles each, Lee Maris, a single and double, Larry Chubbuck, a
three-run-producing triple and Charlie Mackey, a triple. Hendrix
also contributed to preserving the no-hitter for Coleman with his
fine play at thirdbase for the winners.
The second game which the visiting Rebels won, 11-10 had a
far different pattern from the opener as each team scored freely.
Willie Solomon, the little southpaw started on the mound for the
Cubs but was ineffective. He was followed by Johnny Hall and
Harold Booth. The visitors used fireballing righthander James
Mack all the way in the second game.
Sunday the Cubs will be back in Savannah. Buses will leave
Augusta to take Cubs’ supporters who wish to see their favorites
i,n action.

Commission. The Task Force should meet at least once per

governments and all funds necessary for operation of the Task
Force mission come from funds available to the
Augusta-Richmond County governments.

Commission in their attempts to do whatever is legally necessary

GENERAL SUMMARY
Findings in this Audit of social and economic conditions of the
black population in Augusta and Richmond County point up
many inequities which affect black people. Most of these
inequities are due to past and present racial discrimination.
This Urban League Audit revealed unemployment and
underemployment, inadequate and limited housing, police
brutality, poverty, and a lack of adequate health services to be
the most serious problems which concern black citizens in
Augusta and Richmond County. The overconcentration of blacks
in such categories as unemployed, poor, drop-outs, etc. is the
product of past and present discrimination. The task for the
Augusta community is to develop meaningful mechanisms to
include all of its citizens in its economic and political affairs of
the community.
Undoubtedly, the city government and many public and
private agencies have made commitments insuring that black
citizens shall be accorded all rights guaranteed by state and
federal statutes. With few exceptions, these rights have not been
enforced in the Augusta-Richmond County area. The need to
guarantee all people equal access to good jobs, adequate housing,
adequate health services, etc. is the major issue that must be
resolved.
This Audit, authorized by the Mayor, members of the County
Commission, and concerned groups of blacks and whites is
designed to provide a body of accurate information on major
problems. The findings and recommendations herein presented
will not make a difference unless they are acted upon. Some of
the findings and recommendations are general and others are
specific, but all are designed to make Augusta-Richmond County
a good place for all people to live.

HENRY COLEMAN (LEFT) POSES WITH UNIDENTIFIED BATTERY MATE
Hometown Legend Peevy Looks
The report by Ralph Garr
that he was the second best
player in his hometown behind
Lee Chester Peevy isn’t
completely accurate, according
to Lee Chester Peevy.
“You see, I wasn’t better
than Garr at everything,” Lee
Chester said. “I was just better
at running and hitting.”
The Road Runner and Lee
Chester Peevy were “raised
from babies together,” and
earlier this week Garr, who has
been one of the top hitters in
baseball all season, said, “If
you think I can play, you
should have seen Lee Chester
Peevy.”
“Me and Garr played on
different teams back home
(Ruston, La.),” Lee Chester
continued. “He played for the
Ruston Blue Angels and I
played for the Black Sox, but
we used to play a lot together
‘cause the Blue Angels always
played during the day and Garr
would play for the Black Sox
at night. That Garr, he’d
practice all the time. He scored
a lot of runs at ole Frazier
Field.”

Garr, who is thought to be the
fastest man in baseball?
“Yeah, we used to race all
the time,” Lee Chester
answered. “But we stopped
‘cause I always beat him. I used
to play on Garr’s team at
Grambling during the summers
and I’d hit four-something.
The fastest guy at Grambling
was a man named John Wright
or something like that. We
raced one time and tied.
“That Garr was always a
good ballplayer, though. He
could really glove it. He played
second base and I played
outfield at Lincoln High, and I
guess Garr was as good as
anybody on the team except
me and Earl James Albritton
(‘spelled two or three different
ways’). I usually led the team
in hitting and homers, but Earl
James beat me out for homers
one year.”
Lee Chester said that
baseball scouts talked to him
about signing the same time
they signed the Road Runner,
but Lee Chester was playing
for the Black Sox and never
got around to signing.
“I moved to Houston a
couple of years after I got out
of Lincoln High,” Lee Chester
continued. “I organized the
Third Ward Black Sox here,
and we played for a while. But
we finally disorganized in
about 1965 or ’66, and I
haven’t played since.”
When did Lee Chester first
find out that Garr had made it
to the big leagues?

ATLANTA—Speedy Ralph Garr will have his day on Sunday June 27th, when the Braves
hold Write-in-Ralph Day at Atlanta Stadium. The Braves game that day against the Cin
cinnati Reds at 4 p.m. will be dedicated to the purpose generating votes for Garr's write-in
campaign for selection to play in the Major League All-Star Game this season. Replacing
injured Rico Carty in left field this season, Garr has led the big leagues most of the year
in hitting, and his outstanding speed resulted in Warner Bros, granting him exclusive
rights to the name Road Runner. The first 15,000 youngsters attending Write-in-Ralph Day
at Atlanta Stadium will receive a free Ralph Garr "Road Runner" bicycle license tag like
the one pictured above.

The Official Report from
Georgia's Big League Team
ATLANTA (PRN) - The
nation’s largest aerial
fireworks show will take place
before, during and after the
Braves game on Monday night,
July sth, against the
Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta
Stadium.
In a colorful display,
rockets will be fired up to a
thousand feet into the sky
above the Stadium. An average
of a rocket every five seconds
will explode during the
45-minute post-game show.
The fireworks are being
brought to Atlanta from seven
different countries by Sterling
Beer, and Sterling plans to
make the gigantic display an
annual event to cap off the
Fourth of July weekend in
Georgia.
Amazingly, the rockets are
as big as ten inches in
diameter, and they will be
fired so high into the air that
it was necessary for the Braves
to notify the airlines so that
air traffic could be routed
around the Stadium during the
display. A total of seven banks
of mortars will be firing the
rockets at a time, and rockets
will begin being fired at Noon
and will continue during the
day with the big show
following the game.
The fireworks can be
viewed clearly up to four miles
from the Stadium, and special
rockets will be fired between
innings during the game and
whenever the Braves hit a
home run.
