TOOTIN HIS HORN TOO LOUD
Duane Thomas, the NFL sensation of 1970, is being a toughie
for the Dallas Cowboys to sign. He is holding out for a much
larger salary than the Cowboys right now are willing to agree to.
This is natural for him to try to get as much as he can at the
bargaining table; other players have done this and are continuing
to do so.
It’s true that Thomas was most instrumental on helping the
Cowboys get to the Super Bowl this year, and it was felt by many
that without him the handy-men would not have made it. This
writer, however, feels that the Cowboys’ star is being too brash in
saying that his team will not and cannot make it back to the
Super Bowl without him on the team-playing. Sure he is a darn
good back, but he should be sensible enough to realize that he is
not the only good back around. Good backs come, and good
backs go. And they will continue to come and go as long as there
is professional football. He’d better believe this and toot his horn
in another manner.
FALCONS’ DRAFT CHOICE
IS FIRST
Joe Profit, the Atlanta
Falcons’ 1971 first draft
choice, made history in College
football when he became th*
first back to play in the Gulf
States Conference as a star for
Northwest Louisiana. His
rushing record in the Gulf
States Conference made him a
champ in that field and a star
to be reckoned with in the pro
ranks.
Although he has not inked
his contract with the Falcons,
he has been working out with
the 1971 College All Stars in
preparation for the big game
this week between the All Stars
and the Baltimore Colts, the
pro football champions. His
presence in the lineup is
expected to bolster the chances
of an upset win this year for
Blanton Collier’s recently
graduated collegians.

it quits as a professional

MAJORS HAVE ONE LEE
MAY(E) NOW
For some time there have
been two Lee May(e)s in the
major leagues. There was a Lee
MayE with the Chicago White
Sox and a Lee May with the
Cincinnati Reds. However, the
Lee May of the Reds has been
a more prolific man with the
bat, and continues to do so.
The Lee MayE of the White
Sox has not been too effective
with the bat this season. He has
been disappearing from the
ranks of the effective major
league batters for the past two
seasons, this having been the
reason for his short stay with a
few teams.
Now that the Sox have
released Maye, with Hawaii
picking him up, baseball fans
hearing the name Lee May(e)
in the news, will not have to
wonder which one is making
the news.

Sears Home

Sale
Sometimes I find that the best way to get a point
across is by direct, heart-to-heart talk. Here’s a spot
where I’d like to do just that. I’d like to spend a few
moments with you, my reader friend, now.
If you’re like me, the word “Sale” is automatically ex
citing ... my eye’s light up and my interest perks up.
And surely you realize that many times, the ads you see,
represent only part of the “Sale” because when you get
to the store . . . there are usually many more items to
choose from .. at least that’s been my experience. Also,
I usually find that the actual merchandise is much better
than I imagined . . . particularly this is true with Sears
appliances.
Sears Sale is NOW
Imagine all kinds of Sears Home Appliances, priced
way, way down. Why now? Simply because July is usual
ly the slow selling season, what with peope on vacation
and all. But, what s more important, I’m talking about
those famous Kenmore Washers, Dryers, Sewing Ma
chines, Vacuum Cleaners, Ranges, Dishwasher, and
Coldspot Refrigerators and Freezers, also Sears Tele
vision Sets. These are the things we all want for our
homes. ~ ..
Just for example: Sears Sewing Machine -1601.
Here’s one machine that does all the really important
jobs and does them well. It’s easy to operate, comes in
a choice of cabinets.. .and right now it’s on SALE.
Other outstanding examples would include Sears
Washers and Dryers. The latest in home laundry con
venience with push-button controls and cycle settings
for the new fabrics. Or maybe you’d like to replace your
refrigerator, electric or gas range, home freezer or other
major appliance. Many of these items are on SALE right
now. What you should remember about Sears appliances
.there’s always SERVICE available.

According to the director,
Ernest Tolbert, the S3O, (XX)
program almost failed to
materialize. After his first
proposal was rejected Tolbert
contacted Paine Alumnus
Charles Mathis of HEW and
Curtis Atkinson, Black
Assistant to Senator Talmadge.
Talmadge in turn contacted the
Regional Four Council, HEW,
OEO, HUD, and
Transportation and was able to
secure discretion funds.
There are Hl colleges
throughout the country funded
for such programs. Atlanta is
the only other Georgia city
with a Youth Education Sport
Program.
