THOMAS (TOMI HUGGINS “ The most Qualified Candidate to represent all the people fairly and impartially.” "GOING PLACES” Philip Waring BLACK CATHOLICS APPEAL TO POPE A high ranking group of Black Roman Catholics -a priest, a nun, and three lay persons - flew to Rome on Sunday morning to describe to the Pope their feelings of race prejudice within the American Catholic church, according to the weekend editions of both the N.Y. TIMES and N.Y. POST. Rev. Father Lawrence E. Lucas, pastor of Harlem’s Church of the Resurrection, and president of the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus, heads the deletion which also includes: Sister Martin dePorres Grey, president of the National Conference of Black Sisters; Joseph Dulin, president of the National Black Lay Catholic Caucus; Charles Hammock, executive director of the lay group and Estelle Collins of the Baltimore Black Catholic Caucus. The delegation said that they would urge the Holy Father to: name a Black priest as Archbishop of Washington, D.C. (to replace the recently resigned Patrick Cardinal O’Boyle as that city is over seventy per cent colored); allow American Blacks to pursue their culture within the framework of the church just as the Irish, Italians and Polish Catholics, and to do every possible thing to remove racism within the church. Both at the Saturday press conference and in public appearances on network television over the past two years members of this group loudly complained that the American hierachy had long treated their Black brothers in a dishonest, racist and superficial way. Father Lawrence said that there were 800,000 Black Catholics in the United States out of a total Catholic population of 48 million, only 160 Black priests out of a total of 57,000 and only one auxiliary (assistant) bishop out of over 300 American bishops. The delegation asked that all people of good will pray for the success of their mission to Rome, noting its importance to the church in America. Eleven o’clock on Sunday morning has been called the most segregated hour in America in both its Protestant and Catholic churches. AMERICAN EXPRESS FIGHTS SICKLE CELL The current edition of EBONY magazine has a feature story on Sickle Cell disease and points to the fact that one out of ten Black Americans carries it. This illness is inherited and has no known cure. The American Express Company, one of the giants in international business, is lending a special hand in a major fight against this disease. Please check both the EBONY story on this dread disease and the American Express ad which backs up its fight through donations from the purchase price of its money orders. A Foundation for Research and Education in Sickle Cell Disease has been organized in New York City. Big baseball homerun hitter Willie Stargell has organized Black athletes into a foundation to help fight this disease. Nationally famous public relations expert Dick Campbell heads the New York foundation. ABOUT AUGUSTANS AROUND THE NATION My condolences to Mrs. Adelaide Walker Jacquet, Mrs. Grace Walker Ramsey, W. UNFAIR TREATMENT FOR LUCY LANEY SCHOOL Word has just reached me about some plans which the Richmond County Board of Education is putting into effect at Lucy Laney High School. The Attica infamy is only the prison’s version of the racial confrontation of all America. This racial attitude is projected in every part of the world where white Americans preside. They spread their hatred for black Americans in Japan, Korea, and in all military bases in Europe. This entire condition boils down to the immutable fact that America is prone to hold onto the detestable status quo where Blacks are concern. It is a moral condition and the White Church should have taken responsibility in eradicating this pathological maleficence. Os course, its action is not surprising since the White Church in 1660 gave its sanction to the institution of slavery. Up to that time blacks, like poor whites, were indentured servants. Until 1640 blacks owned land, voted and testihed in court ; they held positions of authority and lived side by side with whites. Dr. Kenneth M. Stampp, a noted historian of early America, put it this way, “Black and White indentured servants of the 17th centuty seemed to be remarkablly unconcerned about visible physical differences. They toiled together in the fields and fraternized during leisure hours. In the years between 1660-1680, cotton and tobacco plantations needed a larger labor force. Right here the White Church could have asserted its moral influence in the young nation, but it chose the path of least resistence; and it is reaping the whirl-winds of irrelevancy until the present day. There was the possibility of enslaving the Indians, which would have been just as bad; for no group has a moral right to force another group into involuntary servitude. The Indians would not have made good slaves, because they were weak and sickly; and knowing the country-side so well made it easy for them to run away. (BLOODY MONDAY AT ATTICA GAVE MANY BLOOD THIRSTY LAWMEN MOMENTS OF SADISTIC GLEE) It has always been suspect in the black community that the National Guard and most big city police forces were loaded with black-hating elements. So a good deal of that hatred was brought to the surface, by the truesome stories that were gleefully told by National Guardsmen after the Attica massacre. The excerpts below are from authentic sources of leading national magazines and newspapers: “A National Guardsman told a Federal District Court in Buffalo after the battle that prison guards forced the more militant blacks to run a gantlet naked.” He said that, “guards beat black inmates with clubs jabbing them in their genitals.” Another prisoner guard was heard to make this statement: “There’s a stigma attached to us here at Attica, because we blew off some niggers’ heads, to be perfectly blunt about it. If I had my way I wouldn’t hesitate to kill a nigger, even if he only stepped on the flowers in my yard.” Reporters and citizens-committee members heard a trooper yell when a black newsman was about to photograph a helicopter: Hey are you going to let that nigger take your picture? This is only a sampling of the deep racist attitudes of the type of men who are supposed to be custodians of the law. This shameful rhetoric and action of the hate-filled whites that was in charge at Attica prompted the editors of Newsweek to make this pertinent statement: “It is often a reflection of the worst aspects of this society- bureaucratic callousness, racism and violence. There has always been a bias in law enforcement against blacks and today they take a highly ideological view of their incarceration.” “Black Muslims, Black Panthers, Young Lords, activist Chicanos are working in the prisons, where inmates are eager for prideful identification with outside groups.” YOUR VOICES IN CITY GOVERNMENT HENRY HOWARD & B.
