LOWLY BALDWIN COUNTY
HOLDS THE KEY
Now that the ARC Musketeers have dashed all hopes of an
undefeated regular season for the Lucy Laney Wildcats, the hand
should clearly be seen “writing on the wall”. The 14-12 defeat,
that the Musketeers tagged the Wildcats with, should have Laney
thinking strongly that the winless Baldwin County Braves might
just make the now once-beaten Wildcats the victims of another
upset.
Laney had been stumbling all season long, only to look this
reality squarely in the face late in each of their previous victories.
ARC was aware of the Wildcats tendency to stumble, waited for
the opportunity and stepped right in for the victory at the
opportune time. Thus Coach Dupree at Laney finds himself
having to get his team really ready for a team that has not won a
game all season.
A few weeks ago when Baldwin County faced the Laney team
here in Augusta, they had the Wildcats reeling for a full half of
play, only to falter in the second half and lose 34-0. The score,
however, was not indicative of the rough night they made for the
local gridders in the losing cause.
In the event Laney stumbles again at Milledgeville this week,
the Musketeers of ARC or the Bulldogs of Butler will be waiting
in the “wings” for another crack at them for the Region IV AAA
title. In either case the Wildcats will be in for a rough evening.
And they just could stumble again and let the title slip out of
their grasp.
JOSEY CAN UP WIN MARK
TO 5-4
This week when the Josey Eagles wrap up the season against
Effingham, they can finish the season with a five won four loss
record by winning. This record will not be an indication of the
brand of ball that the Eagles have played for the past four games,
only losing to powerful Thomson 27-20 two weeks ago.
Coach Hank Daggett’s eleven is expected to get by Effingham,
thereby upping their mark to 5-4. But Effingham is one of the
weaker teams in the Josey region, and they would like nothing
better than to tag the Eagles with a season-ending defeat and
prevent them from winning four of their last five games.
EX GA. HIGH SCHOOL WHIZ
NOW WITH HAWKS
Don Adams, who was a terror on the basketball court while
playing for South Fulton High School in the Atlanta area a few
years back, is back in Atlanta as a member of the NBA Atlanta
Hawks. His return was the result of a four-player deal between
the Hawks and the Houston Rockets.
Adams is remembered as the 6’5” star of South Fulton High
when Lucy Laney and the Atlanta team had such a keen rivalry
going prior to the demise of the GIAA. He is now listed as 6’7”
and a potential star in the pro ranks.
HATS OFF TO ARJ
The A.R. Johnson Panthers grabbed all the “marbles” in junior
high football Saturday night as they crushed the John Tutt
Dragons, 42-0. In winning the Championship ARJ completed the
season unbeaten and scored on but once.
Coach Marion Barnes should be commended for his successful
efforts in molding such a powerful offensive and defensive team
at Johnson. His success this season may benefit a number of the
senior high schools in the County as many of his players will be
continuing their footballing at one of the local senior high
schools.
