The News-Review - November 24, 1971, i ..,.i I [ (Walking 11l I] With 's3[ I H I Dignity || I iili ■ j St-f i| If by Al Irby I I 1 1 (A RATIONAL SCRUTINY OF OUR PAST HISTORY IS BRINGING TO LIGHT, THAT IN MANY AREAS, THE MYTHS OF PURITY AND ULTRA-HONESTY WERE MOSTLY FRAUDULENT) Is the real truth about to be revealed of the concealed mediocrity and hypocrisy of our Founding Fathers ? The early settlers, lives and attitudes have been prettified and glorified for a gullible posterity. A group of early captured American historians have cloaked a sanctimonious halo about the real life-styles'and mores of the people that developed the blue-prints for the 13 original colonies. But the whole truth has never been explained, for a group that was so holy and pure of purposes yet make so many obvious immoral mistakes, that are haunting, and polarizing our lives until this present day. After 200 years a breed of young historians have emerged to de-bunk the righteous image, that was supposedly innate in our early inhabitants of the so-called new world. The standard American history textbooks assigned to high schools and colleges are duping misled Americans into accepting their heritage as upright and un-blemished. The villages of New England were supposed to have been citadels of political propriety and fair-play, but materials are being uncovered, that expose the hidden bigotry. Studies are being cited that detail the devices which the powerful used to control the public meetings with iron hands. They would exile ideological and social deviants, and dissenters, as well as many of the poor. This progressive school of young historians are de-bunking all of the current verbosity about small businessmen, farmers, and reformers to break up trusts and regulate big business. To the contrary leading corporations seek federal regulation. The aim of these big companies is to escape people-bakced state legislation and to end price cutting, raids and other forms of increasingly destructive competition. Dr. Jesse Lemisch, a liberal young historian at Roosevelt University in Chicago, cites from impeccable sources, that victory of big business in achieving the rationalization of the country that the federal government can provide. These searchers of the truth have persuaded many to distrust seriously the orthodox views that Soviet’s expansionism alone was overwhelmingly responsible for the Cold War. The Soviet Union, terribly weakened by World War 11, sought little more than security within a relatively narrow sphere of influence. Dr. Gabriel Kolko,a keen student of Eastern European Affairs, had this to say: “Far from menacing Western Europe or other parts of the non-Communist world, the Soviets simply resisted U.S. efforts to oust them from Eastern Europe. Recently, a Congressional Committee heard Professor William A. Williams, dean at Oregon State University and a noted Progressive historian, expound his view that “the Vietnam war definitely isn’t an aberration but a logical culmination of U.S. expansionism.” Progressive or liberal Historians are gaining influence in the traditionally conservative American Historical Association, and they are becoming increasingly common on many campuses. Only a few teach in the South; nearly every major Midwestern and Northeastern University has at least two resident. This new breed of crusading historians may include the American Blacks in their effort to correct the great evil of emasculation of one great segment of an ethnic group. Despite the obvious many road-blocks, that laborers, poor farmers and other disadvantaged groups, that left few records, these enterprising young men are trying to reconstruct the lives of these unfortunate people. Some are reconstructing slavery from accounts not of slaveholders, but of fugitive slaves. Others are exploring the plights of the American Indians from the viewpoint of the Indians themselves. The history of women also will be reviewed. If this movement of truth continues to spread in intellectural circles, the whole concept of present-day history will have to be discarded and discredited as a great fraud. Many Blacks are backing away from the present-day concept of Christendom in Western civilization. This Thanksgiving to me is a generous contribution to UNICEF, so some of the 900 million needy children of Asia, Africa and Latin America can have one decent meal. Powell and William H. Rehnquist to the Supreme Court with reactions ranging from coolness to outright hostility. These attitudes are justified by the apparent rightward shift of the Court and the belief that this one great institution that has been a stalwart defender of the civil rights of black people may be turned into a rigid opponent of those rights. Some people may have been convinced that black people would be grateful for the fact that the Administration didn’t name some of the rumored candidates for the vacant seats, and so would be warmer toward the two men actually named. It’s true that the rumored nominations of obviously unqualified people did send shock waves of alarm through the black community. But relief that some of the mediocre possibilities were not named is balanced disappointment with the actual nominees. There is no reason for black people to feel that a Virginia corporation lawyer and an Arizona Goldwaterite will be especially zealous in protecting their interests. Mr. Powell’s conservative views on civil liberties issues leaves much to be desired. But most of the controversy centers about Mr. Rehnquist, whose activist conservatism is far from the strict constructionist philosophy enunciated by the President. A strict constructionist is one who is timid about changing prior court rulings and who tries to keep personal political philosophy at a minimum. But Mr. Rehnquist is outspoken in his belief that a judge’s philosophy should color his decisions, regardless of prior cases. He is admittedly a man of the Right, whose public career places him on record against civil rights laws and civil liberties questions. A hard-liner on law and order, he gives little evidence of much affection for the Bill of Rights or for the federal government’s role in extending those rights to black citizens. j It’s up to the Senate to confirm these nominees, and each . individual Senator will have to search his conscience and ask ( himself if a consistent record of opposition to civil rights bills and to ending segregation by governmental action is really what is 1 needed in a Supreme Court justice in this time of racial tension. ********** BOOST FOR BLACK BUSINESS: President Nixon has finally ’ moved on his 1968 campaign promise to build, in that unfortunate phrase, “black capitalism.” He recently requested more than SIOO million over the next 18 months for his Office of Minority Enterprise. The meaning of this request and related changes in small business aid and loan procedures is to put badly needed dollars into the pipeline for minority entrepreneurs. This step in the right direction won’t create an overnight “economic miracle” in the ghetto, but it does provide some visible, tangible evidence that there is concern about the long-neglected black sector of the business world. It is to be hoped that this is but the first step in a positive program of revitalizing the black economy. Next on the agenda should be bold programs to end joblessness and poverty. ********** SCHOOL FUNDING: Last week we wrote about the terrible inequities in education caused by the outmoded property tax structure that fosters segregation. Now, a federally financed study confirmed that “great inequities exist” and recommends that local school systems be funded by the state and federal governments. This report should give a boost to the mushrooming movement for reform. ********** FACTS: The U.S. government makes official what we knew all along. A Commerce Department special study states: “The income of the average Negro family with three earners is not significantly different from the family income of the average white family with one earner.” Average family income for whites with one worker is $8,450. Black families with two working members average only $7,782. I view this opportunity as a two-fold endeavor that could possibly be quite worth while. First, I have ideas and opinions that I would like very much to share and debate with others. Secondly, I am quite pleased to be able to offer the service of a black newspaper to the citizens of Athens, Georgia. There is a tremendous need in Athens for a black newspaper that will address itself to problems and needs in the black community. The news media in Athens is focused on the larger white community with a resulting lack of coverage of news in the black community. Black Athenians are urged to submit their news to this writer for publication in this paper. The black focus of this paper will further advance the cause of the black liberation movement as local blacks work to improve their plight in this community. The writer is a concerned citizen who hopes to establish MEMBER FDIC (stßvSi) \OANK/ “When most banks are open rm usually at 30,000 feet.” “That’s why I’m glad my bank, C&S, has the new Instant Banker. This is a new experience that will require creative efforts for eventual success. I have contacted a number of blacks in this community and all expressed enthusiasm about this project. Several have agreed to work with the writer and they will be introduced in later issues. Some whites have also expressed their views that this effort is needed and have encouraged the writer to perform this task. The support and ideas of others are solicited for the growth of the paper in Athens. This project should not be seen as “my” newspaper by Athenians for it is hoped that this can be “our” newspaper. The news of blacks as well as news of the community as a whole will be published. A few points should be made clear to all at this time. This writer is not and never will be a tool of the so-called “white power structure.” My primary concern is that this paper will be useful to the black community and it will not be used by any person or persons to mislead or exploit blacks. Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s book that is entitled “Unbought and Unbossed” states my position rather clearly. To seek truth without fear or favor is the basic aim of this writer and others who will be working on this project in Athens. Fellow black Athenians and others, your support and acceptance is greatly needed if this newspaper is to succeed in Athens. The success of this paper in meeting an important service need in Athens depends on your cooperation and consideration. Let us move forward in a great way as we tear down the walls of news darkness in Athens and let the sunshine into this community. ATTENTION OTHERS News of your organization or church may be printed by sending it to P.O. Box 321, Athens, by Monday of each week. Your letters to the editor and news are welcome. Newsboys are needed to sell the paper and churches or other groups can raise funds by selling subscriptions. “A UGUSTA 'S QUALITY DEALER ” SALES •- SERVICE - PARTS BANK FINANCING - AUTO INSURANCE 100% GUARANTEED USED CARS Washington Rd.
