Official Orgnn «f Polk County, omcial organ of the City of Cedartow THURSDAY, JANUARY 18,1900. the white primary. The movement in favor of a white primary for I’olk county, inaugurated by Dr. Win. Bradford, chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee seems to be one of the most popular suggestions ever made to the people of Polk, who see in it an opportunity to restore harmony among our people and to avoid the disgraceful and deinoraliz ing- scenes of recent political cam paigns. The Standard is frank to say that when Dr. Bradford first proposed this plan, we had no doubt of its wisdom but did doubt its feasibility. The re ports from all parts of the county have been of such a nature, however, that we no longer doubt its entire success Representative citizens from every district and from all parties express themselves strongly as in favor of this effective harmonizing 0 ineasure, and the white primary is as certain to come in Polk as it has already come in Floyd and many other Georgia counties. In fact, the man or set of men who would be unwise enough to oppose this movement in the interests of decency and harmony will be crushed as completely as if the car of Juggernaut had rolled over them. When the people become, aroused and determined on a measure for their own benefit, as they now are, the small-fry politicans have to get out of the way, or get run over. In common with all good citizens who have the real welfare of the county at heart, we are gratified at the favorable reception accorded throughout tile county to Chairman Bradford’s sug gestion. The only opposition seems to be “under the cover” and to come from a very few hungry schemers who have heretofore professed to favor such a movement but who are trying to discredit it now because they don’t happen to see any personal benefit in it to themselves. These men are slip ping around quietly and trying to create the impression that the sugges tion was made in the interest of some faction, when as a matter of fact it was made ip the interests of harmony, and was made thus early in order that it could not be truthfully charged that it was for the benefit of any person or persons but for the good of the county at large. All fair-minded men will see at a glance that when white men of all parties are allowed to vote in such a primary, the movement must be one in favor of decency and not for politi cal advantage. The few men who are quietly conspiring to oppose this white primary movement are niakin a record for themselves which will some time rise against them if they persist in it. We believe, however, that when they find out that the peo ple of Polk are actually in earnest in wanting it, they will come gracefully into line. They may hope to profit by perpetuating strife among our people, but the people themselves are tired of strife and will not hesitate to put the gjal of condemnation on the strife- makers. Every member of the Democratic Executive Committee who was pres ent at the meeting Saturday was heartily in favor of the white primary. Those present were Dr. Win. Bradford, chairman;. C. A. Wood, of the 17th; J. A. Campbell, of Blooming Grove; J. A. Garrett, of Lake Creek; C. R. Wingard, of Roekmart; D. A. White head, of Cedartfiwn. All are represen tative citizens in close touch with their conj^n'.-.j,ities. ’Squire J. M. Mc- Ejiftrr&y^ of Fish, and ’Squire B. B. Bishop, of Buncombe, sent letters giv ing their votes in favor of the measure. The eleven districts of the county give fifteen members to the commit tee, and in view of the great impor tance of the movement it was thought vwsc to belay issuing the formal call until an adjourned meeting to be held on the 27th inst., at which time it is hoped every member of tluMmmi^ittee will be present. . “ The »>ovemenys4^ ()iuilar on ,^fofr. lie V has the supjjgyt of t " * ^citizens of ^ >0 ^j^gardIeSS,.yI Ley. ONE POINT OF VIEW. A few citizens of Polk county, with whom the editor of the Slate has dis cussed tlie question of a white pri mary, claim to detect below tlie sur face of this movement the purpose of their-political enemies to control the affairs of the county. They no doubt base this claim on honest belief .in its truth ; and for angbt we know, it may be_ true. However, this is not tlie point from which the editor of the Slate viewed the matter when his at tention was directed to it by the chairman of the Democratic executive committee. The editor of this paper is a student of polities, hut not a politician. Our unequivocal endorsement of the white primary movement is sufficient evi dence on this point. No politican who is not absolutely sure of having over whelming popular sentiment to strengthen his position, ever takes a stand in the open field and contends for that which he believes to be right, as the Slate proposes to do in this case-. The editor of the Slate was an earn est advocate of white primaries sev eral years before the chairman of the Polk county Democratic executive committee issued his address. We be lieve in the white primary for the sole reason that it will rid the South to a great degree of the curse of the pur chasable voter and help to restore pol itics to that high plane where decent and honorable men can participate in elections and exercise the right of suffrage without detriment to a good conscience. Actuated by this motive, we shall continue to advocate white primaries.—Roekmart Slate. A Narrow Escape. Thankful words written by Mrs.' Ada E. Hart, of Groton, S. The Executive Committee of the Democratic party of Polk county met, at call of the, chairman, at the Court House today to take into consideration the advisability of calling a white pri- for the selection of candidates for coufity o(trees. After reports from the members present, indicating an al most unanimous desire cf the people of their several districts for such a pri mary, and a full and free disenssion amsug -the -members, a majority of jghom were present in person or by lets ter, it was the unanimous decision of the committee that snch a primary be held. The committee further decided that, as this was a matter of prime im portance, and of nnnsnal interest to the people, they would adjourn nntil Satur day, Jan. 27th, in order that a full at tendance of the committee might he present and participate in its delibera tions. It is the intention -of the committee to select as managers for this primary representative men from all the divis ions and Bnb-divisions in politics in this county, so as to emphasize the fact that it is a people’s primary, and not a party movement, and to be participated in on cqnal terms by all legal white voters. Tho committee will therefore re assemble at the Court Honse at 10 n. m. on the day designated and resume work on this measure. Wm. Bradford, Chairman; D. A. Whitehead, Cedartown Dist.; C. E. Those who have appeared to be enemies are now the best friends. Those who have spoke evil of each other now speak in tones of love for each other. Those who seemed to try 10 check a brother’s way now take him by the hand and bid him Godspeed. The church and the excluded mem bers took up the advice of the Council Committee and adopted it by section each party doing its full duty until a complete satisfactory conclusion ad justed all their differences. After all grievances were turned into joy the church went into a choice fora pastor. Bros. Camp and Davis were chosen, to both work together as pastors of the church, and the church feels sure it will be ably presided over by those two able divines. Bro. Davis was called to New Prospect last Sunday to attend a funeral, and Bro. Camp very ably filled the pulpit here. We hope no outsider will ever be so mean as to try to start another spark of this trouble. We feel sure it won’t be done by any of our members.
