Miss Amanda Snellgrove, a white girl
i about 29 years old,yesterday afternoon
about 6 o’clock,by a negro brute named
John' Hailey.
Miss Snellgrove lives with her
mother and brother about a mile east
of Marietta, and on yesterday' after
noon bad left her home and gone into
a piece of woods about 300 yards from
her home for the purpose of getting
some wood with which to prepare the-
evening meal.
While, there and without any know
ledge or warning, she was siezed from
behind by tlie violent hand of a big,
surly negro brute, who, it is believed,
had been hiding in the woods for tile
purpose of putting into execution his
evil intentions.
Miss Snellgrove fought the negro
furiously, and succeeded in getting
loose from his grasp and began to run,
screaming, in the direction of iier
home, hut she was soon overtaken
by the brute, who threw her to the
ground and telling her that lie- would
kill her by cutting her head off with
the knife he then had open in his
hand if she made any alarm.

Most men would not have thought
the outlook an inviting one. The little
congregation of CO had no church build

hall over a grocery store. But he went
to work with a will. As a result of his I
energetic methods the little hall was
soon abandoned and a substantial stone
church erected, q’he congregatiou was
increased to 300. It was-not a rich or
fashionable congregation, nor is it to
day, but it is very much alive.
Early in his pastorate Mr. Sheldon
began ,to employ strikingly original
methods. He was not satisfied with
the kind of work usually done by min

the masses of the people had on the
subject of Christianity, and lie wanted
to linjl out abont their dail3’ lives and
occupations.
With this desire in his heart he asked
his congregation to excuse him from
pastoral work for three-months, and
his congregation saw little of him ex

at home scarcely any of the time, but
very few people knew what he was do
