JAM KB WHITCOMB HI LEY.
James Whitcomb Riley, dear-loved poet,
Close to the people’s hearts,
Humbly bath sat at Nature’s feet
And from her learned her Arts.
His muse is such a lively jade,
And goes about so spryly,
If asked, Who'* yer favorite poet,
Wo say, the Hooslor poot —
That’s Riley.
His verso is always pure and sweet.
And free from sordid dross,
And measure follows measure like
Swift-moving, thorough-bred ‘‘boss.”
His rhymes run on so oven like—
Smooth ns if they’re “lley,”—
His wit is always clean and good,
And crystal clear—not “rlley.”
Ho handles every phase of life,
The grave as well as witty.
He touches up our risiblos,
And plays upon our pity.
The boy with “curv'ture of the spine”
Makes us both sad and “smiley,”
A smile oil Up and tear In eye—-
A laugh and sigh—that’s Riley.
He takes us back to boyhood days—
Back to the “Old Bwlmmin’ Hole.”
On summer (lays lie wooes sweet sleep
Upon some grassy knoll.
Ho brings the old-time things to us
So that they touch us Highly,
For boyhood’s hopeB and joys and friends
Are ne’er iorgot by Riley.
The children hail him as their own,—
And well, Indeed, they may,
For the “Little Orphant Annie”
Thro’ him has “001110 to Btajf.”
She tells those spooky stories, —
And does it, too, so shyly—
About the “gobbellns that git yon,
It you don’t watch out,”-says Rlloy.
He tells ot the “Doodlo-Bug’s charm,”
Ami of the “Raggedy Man”
Who does the chores, and “Our Hired
Girl”
Whose name’s Ella’buth Ann.
“Tiioy’s thno ler work an’ time for
play,”
The Haggedv Man says slyly,
To get the children out the way
For courtin’ Ann,—says Rlloy.
But Nature is his strongest torto.
Soino way, one always looks
In Riley’s every poem lor
“Green Helds and running brooks.”
He takes us down to “Wriggle Crick,”
And by an angler wily
We sit and fish and fish all day,
llappy to be with Rlloy.
He writes of winter and of spring,
Of summer and of fall.
Eich has its special pleasures
And joys that never pall.
The country has his smiles of love,—
At citlos he laughs dryly.
He’s country-born and country-raised,
And shows It plain—does Riley.
Nature, I said, was his strong forte,—
Nature of every kind.
Better e’en than hill and rill
He knows the heait and mind.
With charity ho views our faults,
Our virtues praises highly,
And true to life word-pictures paints—
This prince of poets—James Riley.

All who use Chamberlain’s Pain Balm

When speaking of this Mr. D. N. Sinks,

I had a severe attack of rheumatism in
