B. I Im ! m , 3 uTTThT ' 11 . 0 » r 1 y, Hipt. ci, n»or, dory. : For just one yeer and nine mouths 1 have owned and edit- mi our little paper Tits Aoki. New*. ) loved my work and my pa|»er but from a physical standpoint the work was too hard f« r me and 1 have eold all but my influence (that I freely give) to Mr. A. A. Webb. My friends, you have been kind to me—I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it.—* Without yoer support and friendship, the werk would have )>«cn an entire failure. A* it was, with my entire self in the work, with your co-operation my paper was never what 1 wanted it to be. Still 1 know' 1 did my best, To my journalistic friends I am under many obligations; to Mr. Herring specially. He has been a most staunch and helpful friend. 1 wish I could repay your kindness measure for meas- tire. Now I ask your continued pat- ronage and support in behalf of Mr. Webb. 1 really want you to do more for him.—lie is more able to meet the demand* of the town and section, Hally to your home paper. It ia the pro¬ tege of the town . Personal pride demands its support. Barely home interests should be first. Make your paper just What Adel need*—A mirror of liar industries and enterprise*. Again that.king you for your kindness and courtesy, 1 say good-by. Tlie retired Lady Editor, Orer.tiug, With this issue (allow us the Usual journalistic license of us¬ ing the plural pronoun for the singular) we assume the man- ageuient of The A owl Nkws which, since the first of last year has been edited and published by the gifted and beloved Miss Maggie Tennant. Miss Maggie has labored earnestly ami faithfully for the upbuild¬ ing of Thr NkwS, and met with • good measure of success. The change is a purely business ons, the main reason being that the physical strain was too great for her to meet the increased de- inands of the office. We gladly give apace for statement from her in regard to the change and ful¬ ly app.eciat* the kind words and good wishes for the present man- agmnent, and only hope to make her friends our own. R*TR08PKCTtVK. The A i»ki. N »wb wa* cstabl ished about twelve years ago and has had a rather checkered career, undergoing many change* of management, ownership and mbchAtiical make-up. About ten years ago the writer made bis first visit to Adel which wa* then enjoying a great building boom and an era of prosperity which ill a few years gave way to the pressure of a great panic aud lapsed into a state of coma. Our first year’s work here whs as a teacher at the Adel Institute commencing with the first ses¬ sion held in thepresent building. Our work and associates from the first ware pleasant and at¬ tachments were soon formed which are yet binding. In fact, we soon beeline wedded to the wire-grass section iu general, nud tooiieof Adel’s most noble young ladies in particular and since then w« have been flesh and blood of this section and more especially Adel and Ber¬ rien county. We have obse» ved the course of our town through ihe varying and trying vicissitudes of a de¬ cade, and during a part of the time we labored wilh and for Ths Adw. Nkws and obtained e^parieac* which will lie of some help in our present effort. We have watched Adel gradually emerge from a stale of lethargy and have beheld handsome brick blocks quickly arise from hot tsh beds, have have seen the old pass and the new now we are liy* ’and ik* progressive and conaei vative, with whom »nd for w ln m we nave the moat en- during confidence and esteem. PSOflPBCnVK. With continued unanimity of purpose and carefully laid pinna, ths futuie of Adel i* assured. With Ibis iltue we drift into the currant and without disparaging any past effort* of the publishers of Tnx Nkws, we propoas to make the effort of our life to improve our town paper and keep fully abreast with the lead¬ er* of the procession. To do thia, ’Ww mutt have the moral and materiel support of the town and community. Along the lines of development we will lend our energie* to home inter- e*te first, and other things will follow in the order of impor¬ tance and proximity. Pounce. We have oeen taught from early childhood that the hopes and interest* of the Southern people were inseparably linked to democracy and we are not yet ready to renounce the faith once delivered to the saint*. Our efforts along this line will bo to perpetuate the teachings of Jef¬ ferson and the other greet lead¬ ers and founders of our party. It will be our happy purpose to loyally support the regularly nominated candidate* of the democratic party, national, stat* atu l county, Final. If Wd can improve and build up a creditable paper along these lines, and in so doing have the goqd will and support of the ma¬ jority of the white people of this section, we will fetd that our ef¬ forts will not have been in vain, and will lie fully compensated for any efforts put forth. The success of the school de¬ mands it. When yon talk school, speak of it as “Our School.” Do not think Hint yon shifted tho burden from your shoulders when yon enter¬ ed your children and promised to pay for their tuition. The traiuiug aud future weliarc of thesi children is a mighty bunion, and rests equally upon your shoulders aud our*. We realise this responsibility. We would uot evadeit- With might and maiu we are bonding every effort to meet it by con¬ scientious work. We are endeavoring to train morally ns well as mentally. We realise that the eternal welfare of your children demands that they form now, right ideals, right ambitious, right conceptions of dnty. But this doe* not relieve rou. The school-room is our forum. Our work, to bo suc¬ cessful, must be co-operative with yours. Too many people send their children to school to get rid of them, To you, as to us, every bright childish face is a foreshadowing of future weal or woe. During school your childrens’ interest is our interest. Is it any less yours? Do all you can at home to stimulate them in their work. Advise with and help them. If there is any thing you dou’t understand, do not condemn or criticise iu their presence, but consult with us. Many a breach hasariscu between parent and teach¬ er through a misunderstanding. We are each your friend and helper; your oo-workers iu the business of direct iug young lives for time aud eternity. Our methods are doubtless new to some. Do not condemn before yon understand. We are cudenvoring to develop in a systematic way the men¬ tal and moral well-being of our pnpils, We do not always hear a recitation by asking printed questions or receiving stereotyped answers. We believe the proper way to develop minds ia to stirn- uloto P U P»1* to think for themselves, and our class work is directed to this purpose. We appeal to the self-res¬ pect aud pride of our pnpils. We be¬ lieve that iu the mind and heart of ev- ery boy aud girl there i* the genn of future uoble manhood aud womanhood, it is to thin future, bright with promise aud glowing with possibilities, that we point them. Have you done a* much? Are you doing as much? Last, but uot least, come to aec us, your presence help# and encourage* the children. We endeavor to tench them that the school-room ia a home, and not a prison. It is indeed a work shop,— but it is your work-shop. The teacher is only your authorised agent- All hi* training aud skill will be futile without your support aud iuflueuoe. Grant us this, aud iu return we give our deepest study, our unceasing aud most consecrated labors to the ujiliftiug, mentally aud morally, of your children aud your community. Your# in the cause, R.
