Municipal Election.
On Wednesday Oct. 17Ui, oc¬
curs the annual municipal el lo¬
tion for mayor ant! entire set of
'‘omieitmen. The election is
being cliseussod in advance and
more tl an one ticket lias been
suggoated. During the past
few years there baa been a very
evident, disinclination on the
part of some of our best citizens
and heaviest tax payers to serve
the town in any official capacity
There Inis also been a general
state of “pathy in town elec¬
tions. For instance, in the ear-
ly part, of the year an election
was advertised and held to (ill
a vacancy on the aldevmnnic
board. After the greatest dif-
lieulty, three managers and one
clerk were secured and the polls
wore opened. Tin three mana¬
gers and ofie clerk promptly de¬
posited their ballots for a prom¬
inent merchant and well-to-do
citizen, who was a school patron
and would have made an excel¬
lent member of the school board.
After holding tho polls open for
six hours, the election wag clos¬
ed and the result announced.
The above mentioned citizen,
who, by the way, Was not a euu-
dididate, received the four votes
cast by the managers and clerk.
Not another citizen ventured
near the voting place all day.
■Inst think of it:fnir rates
rust in a (own tike Adel!
Hie result was, tho merchant
who was unanimously elected
refused to qualify and serve,
lie did not care to represent
such a small constituency. And
the important, place has since
remained vacant.
A good careful business ad¬
ministration during the next
twelve months will mean much
for our town, the lack of it may
cost us much. The school in¬
terest is one of the most impor¬
tant connected with our town
government and should he care¬
fully considered in making up
your ticket. Don’t have any
selfish ends or friend* to sorve
hut look well to the good of all
tax payers and don’t shirk or
evade your duty. 1 f you have
any interest here and are norni-
mated or elected to serve the cit y
in any capacity, you haven’t, a
right to say no.
