James M Griggs, our present congressman and demo¬ cratic nominee to succeed him— •elf, addressed Hie voters of the county at Nashville Tuesday during the noon recess of court. It was announced that he was to speak Monday but circum¬ stances at Washington delayed him until Tuesday. Judge Griggs wps in fine trim and after a short introduction by Hon. H. B. Peeples, he opened his speech in a happy manner that caught the crowd at once. He t hanked the people of Ber¬ rien fot their continued support ntld touched upon the imyort anee of turning out and polling a good vote on election day. He Said that he had seen good dem¬ ocrats turned out of Congress and republicans Boated Just sim¬ ply because the democratic ma¬ jorities were rather small. He further stated no democrat’s seat In Congress was safe with a Small majority or oven a light Vote without opporition. He than took the position that ^rnperialism whs the issue in this campaign and that republicans favored, while democrats oppos¬ ed the issue. He asserted that inhahitanfi! of any teirltory that We might aoquiru would be eith¬ er subjects or oitizeus | that wo conbl not continue as a republic mid fcKeruise authcrity over sub¬ ject?, that form of government belonging to kingdoms and em¬ pires*, that we did not want, to admit Filipinos as full fledged citizens because to take them as a peoplejgenerully they were not In condition to nniko good and desirable dtissns. He also slat¬ ed and affirmed that the inhab¬ itants of tho island of boson, in tho l’bilipinu group, wore ns highly civilised and and enlight¬ ened a, the people of Georgia and were fully as capable of governing themselves. By this time tho Judge had fully warmed up to his subject and assailed the republican pur- ty in no uncertain terms. He said they were under the domi¬ nation of the trusts and that the pressure of Hanna and McKin¬ ley from the White House was brought to bear on republican members of the house who might have convictions differing from the obnoxious leaders of their party, compelling them to Vote for measures that wer« stenches in the nostrils of any liberty loving people or country. These White House echoes were denounced in the niu«t scathing term*. In the course of his remarks he Illustrated his points with several humorous anecdotes, and in passing, ha paid William J liryan a glowing tribute uud closed with a most eloquent per¬ oration in support of the prin¬ ciples of the party of Jefferson, th* greatest statesman our coun¬ try ha# ever produced. »*^TIie court house was crowded to full pSTjity and the speaker v'3 terally applauded and hearty _iratuluted.on hi# fine effort HBVev*r, his spMcii 1»a» not entirely free from cr.tD cistn, the public not being ----1 to accept hi# stetomeut mihiu ...... the - inhabitants of the is- •f Lu*on were tho equals WeofXirl is *u and - 1 ® ’ uHinitg SH^htgs guud snd Chamber' litiiifBc** wi a* «. The Stfa Island Cotton Grow* er« protective Association held meeting at the court house Saturday morning for ilia pur- P'WHi 0 f discussing the cotton nit- nation, and for hearing reports an to tin: condition of the crop in the sea island belt# Mr. U. I’- Jones, the ehnir- man of the advisory board, was hand and made a speech in which lit* stated that he had re¬ ceived reports from every sec- tion of the cotton the crop was very much shorter than former reports indicated. H« spoke at length on the situa¬ tion and Stated that lie believed the staple would go to 28 c;nts < pound within ten days. He advised that the price he fixed at 5KS cents and he urged the farmers to hold it out of the market until that price should be offered for it. When put to a vote, those present pledged themselves unanimously to hold their cotton back as had been suggested by the chairman of the advisory board. The action of the board evi¬ dently had immediate effect, as tne staple popped Up to twenty- two cents in a few minutes and went to tweuty-tWO mid one- eigth yesterday. It is said that Valdosta is paying more for cot¬ ton than the ports are, but there is a general belief that the price at the ports will respond to the reports of a crop shortage from every part of'the sea island belt. —Valdosta Times.
