Congress will convene next week, but thank goodness the legislature will soon flTjffdln. Dr. Broughton and Mayor Woodward, of Atlanta, contin- tse to make faces at each other. The errant mayor seems to be dying hard. The thanksgiving number of the Atlanta Daily News was a gem of the first water. The lit— eVary features were unusually fascinating. The Atlanta Constitution was wrong, a 8 usual, in etlymt* thilt Berrien would he entitled to two representatives by the new 7 Count. We only wish it was so. Quitman has decided that they won fenoug’ glory in get¬ ting first prizes at the State Fair und her Hay and Syrup day has Been declared off for the pres¬ ent. Quite a number of South Geor¬ gia towtts hdVh [hilled off sliiTess- ful fairs and carnivals ties sea¬ son—and the Sefison is winding up with a circus at most every pbifit. It is strange to think that Way- cross has a population of over 6,000 and does not even boast of a cotton liiarkdt. The Magic Oity could get a few valuable points from Adel on this sub- ject. The Waycross Herald suggests Hon, Lem Johnson as an ac¬ ceptable candidate in connection with the next gubernatorial campaign. There will be others. Wiregrass Georgia ought to be able to name the next occupant of the executive Ifiailsidti. Perhaps Congressman Living¬ ston can interest the national house pf representatives in At¬ lanta’s depot problem. Leoni¬ das is u man of resources, there’s no question about that, and a a little matter of half a million dollars is not much to ask of congress. If the Fiiiffinds are to be ex¬ terminated, why not send an overwhelming force over there and have the agony over with and be done with it. With the recent election fresh in our minds, we suggest, that the re¬ cruits come .from the republi¬ can party. The Nicaraga Canal should claim the attention of congress and the scheme should be rush¬ ed to an early completion. Our army in the Philippines would be doing our country a better service if they were handling shovels and [licks on said canal than what they have been doing Ifor tlie past several months-. The present basis Of representa¬ tion in the General Assembly is hot fair from several points of View. Take one of tlie sparsely feettlted counties* fur instance ICchdlg, with a population of &209 and compard with Berrien Which lias six timUS as many in- and they each have representative while Elbert ituk&4ha^B>n, County above,/With but is enti- tied to two le^slatovs. T1 tom as hnd Floyd* with a gOod deal less thaii doublO Berrien’s number have each thtfee times our Strength in the legislative halls. ^ ulton has nearly four times the jpopulatldU of Thomas ot Floyd .yet the same repr^Seiitation in fetatd legislation; These compar¬ isons iffight bn carried further 1 but , we have given enough . to . illustrate the poult-. The saying, which is so com¬ mon aihong the masses, fliat : “Georgia's public schools are be¬ hind those of all other states.” is far from being true. In pub¬ lic education, as in industrial progress Georgia occupies a con- spicuous place among the South- ern states. Compare the schools of Georgia with the Schools of her sister State?: Alabama spends only two dollars per an¬ num on each pupil enrolled in her schools ; South Carolina two ; North Carolina two fifty ; Georgia four ; Texas seven ; West Virginia eight ; while Maryland leads all the states south of MaSon and Dixiou’s line with an expenditure of e- leven dollars f >r each child en¬ rolled. It is seen that Georgia stands neither at the head nor the *xot> of tiiO list. Add to the public appropriate the private subscriptions to supplement tlm public funds and our slate will make a veiy Creditable show¬ A great maity educators com¬ pare the schools of the South with those of tho West. Condi¬ tions are so widely different, in the two sections that a compari¬ son would be unfair. In the West all the states have - a large permanent school fund thrived from the sale and rental of pub¬ lic lands. This tnablds these states to have longer t jrms and better schools than has the South. Colorado spends thirty dollars a year on each child in her schools, yet there are no tax¬ es levied for public education. Other Western Stales are not so fortunate blit in all of them the tax rate for school purposes is very moderate. In Georgia the greater part of the school fund is raised by taxation.
