and failed to receive the rCquir-
ed constitutional majority. The
vote was, for the bill
votes? against, (59 vote*; The
measurd fell five short of a con-
stitufional majority and was
thereforedeclared lost. Our rep¬
resentative, Hon. J. P.Knight,
goes on record as voting against
the bill and will be sustained by
bis constituency dn the position
taken. To bring the question
down to it’s last analysis, it
places the State iii competition
with private and corporate in=
terests. It. is true that the state
receives it handsome income
from tiie rental of a failrdad and
to look at tile question from
that standpoint it might 1)3 pru¬
dent to improve the present ter¬
minal facilities. However, from
<Mir point of view wd think the
state should, at the first propit¬
ious Opportunity, dispose of it*s
railroad and tefminal interests
and retire from that kind of
business; The proceeds of the
sale could 1)3 applied to proper
channels and the legislature
would be relieved of this time

shape all futurd legislation to¬
ward that end and “sell out”

The question niav Be asked :
IIoW dt>€s Massachusetts raise

much does the state spend to

question would be local taxation.
It is hefe tbkt ibis method of
