Told the truth.
A cleryman not long since ob¬
served h horse jockey trying to
take in a gentleman by imposing
upon him a broken-winded horse
for a sound one. The parson taking
the gentleman aside, told him to
be cautious of the person he was
dealing with. The gentleman de¬
clined the purchase, and the jock¬
ey, quite nettled, observed “pur-
eon I had much rather hear you
preach than to see you privately
interfere in bargains between man
and man in this way,” “Well”
replied the parson, “If you had
OCGU where you ought to
been last Sunday you might
heard ir.e preach.” “Where was
that?” inquired the jockey. “In
the state prison,” returned the
clergyman.—ex.

WHERE’S THE DIFFERENCE.
“So you don’t believe in women
smoking?” said the little woman
as she watched her husband light
his.third cigar,
“No, 1 don't!’*
“Well, now, really, John, dear,
what do you call smoking?”
“Why, inhaling tobacco smoke,
of course,”
“But I really don’t understand
your objections to cigarettes,”
said she. “Now just look at this
room; it is blue with smoke. I
have inhaled that into my lungs
for the past six years. To be
sure, you have held all the eigais
but then—now really, what is the
difference? Why would it, be any
worse for me to hold a cigarette
in my hand while I inhale the
smoke?”
