HOMICIDE NEAR TIFTON SUNDAY.
SENSATIONAL KILLING OF MR. OINK WALKER BY AIK.
J. F. WILLIAMS WHO GIVES HIMSELF UP.
-One of the most highly sen.«a-
tional tragedies that has disturb-
th& peace of this county in
years Was the homicide near Tif-
ton Sunday in which Mr. John F.
Williams took the life of his for-
nler friend and neighbor Mr.
Dink Walker.
Mr. Walker and Mr. Williams
belonged to prominent and well
known families and were among
the class of well-to-do and pros-
perous fanners for which Berrien
county is noted. They owned ad-
joining places and had been neigh-
bora and friends for vears. Mrs.
McClelland, a sister of Williams,
witli some children including . one
or more grown sons, lived on Mr.
Walker’s place which adjoined Mr
William’s farm. Parties living
in the neighborhood and who are
entirely responsible say that for
some time Mr. Walkei* had been
frequenting the McClellands and
report goes further and questions
the relations that existed between
Walker and Mrs. McClelland. A
few weeks ago Walker and otie
of the McClelland boys had an
altercation in which Walker was
not content with the treatment
lie received at young McClellands
hands.
Sunday there was a wedding in
the neighborhood, and a royal
good time prevailed. Some of the
members of these families at-
tended the wedding festivities,
and in the mean time strong
drink, the curse of the nation, had
been playing the usual part,
About sundown last Sunday the
Walker-McClelland trouble was
renewed at the McClelland home,
and Waller chased young Me-
Clelland from home, firing sever-

nl shots from his revolver. Mr.
Williams heard the shots from his
home, and not-knowing the na-
lure of the disturbance, he took
his double-barreled shut gun and
made for the scene of the trouble,
Before reaching the place it seems
that he met Walker in pursuit of
young McClelland. Walker had
his pistol in hand and fired on
Williams at right, at the same
time telling him to be a man and
stand his ground. Williams
sought to stop the Trouble, but
Walker kept advancing and tiring
and Williams claims that, to
tect himkelf he fired one barrel of
Ins at Walker, .. , .
gnil and this not
having the desired effect the
er barrel was discharged, striking
Walker with full force. Walker
lingered until ten o’clock when
lie died.
Mr. Williams dfoVe down to
Sparks and took the early morn-
ing train for Valdosta where he
went to employ counsel and to be
advised by his friends,
W hile he was in Valdosta in
Col. Griffin’s law office the officers
received a message to detain him
until an investigation could be
had. It was explained to the of
fleers that Williams was then pre-
paring to return and give himself
up to Sheriff Swindle of this coun¬
ty. This he was allowed to do
without any formal arrest, plac-
ing himself in the hands of the
sheriff Monday afternoon,
Each side has hundreds of
friends throughout ihe county
who deeply regret ihe sad trag-
edy and Mr. Williams’ friends
think that he will have no trou-
bln in making n clear case of self
defense.

received into the school upon these dates
or by the following Monday.

The Penetrating Eyes,
The most preposterous truth-
story that lias fallen under our
notice recently is the Guy Fen ley

the editoiial page of a recent is¬

Guy is a fourteen-yeaf-old white
boy in T“xas who can see water
at almost any depth under the

able in the story is that In sees to
best advantage on dark nights-the
darker the night the better the
