BERRIEN CO.. GEORG IA , FRIDAY, APRIL 19,19m.
COL. DeVANE DEAD.
Expires SuddenlyFrom Rupture
Of Blood Vessel.
One of the most shoekingevents
which has disturbed the quietude
of our town in a long time was
the sudden death of Col. Clias. A
DeVane which occurred at his
home oti Thursday night of last
week just about the tune we had
finished printing the last issue of
the New
His death was caused by the
rupture of a blood vessel in the
lungs. He was in his office all
day Thursday and seemed to be in
his usual good health and spiiits.
lie went out driving late in the
afternoon, returning about dusk.
He ate a hearty supper ana sat
down and conversed with hisfam-
ily until 8 o’clock v hen he walked
out in the back yard, and was
beard to cough lightly, he called
to his wife to bring him a light,
remarking that lie believed lie
was spitting np blood. As she
reached him with the light, the
blood gushed from his mouth in a
large stream. His father and
brother were at his side and as-
listed him to a sitting position on
the edge of the veranda. Physi-
cions were immediately summon¬
ed and Dr. Woodard was with
him in a few moments, Dr.
Gregory arriving a little later,
but they were powerless to stop
the flow of blood which gushed
out at every heart-beat until life
was extinct which was in twenty
or thirty minutes after the rup¬
ture.
Deceased leaves a wife and one
child, a father, brother and sister
and a host of relatives and friends
to mourn his death.
The remains were laid to rest
in the grave yard near old Pleas¬
ant church last Friday at two o’¬
clock, a large funeral cortege ac¬
companying the corpse .from
this place.
Col. D« Vane was a rising young
lawyer and had a bright future
liefore him in the legal world. He
was a graduate of the law school
of Mercer University, and was
admitted to the bar in Macon su¬
perior court on June 6 . 1900.
He carried a policy in the Penn
Mutual for $2,000.
Spring coughs are specially at' j
dangerous and unless cured
once, serious results often follow.
One Minute Cough Cure acts like
magic. It is not a common mix-
ture but is a high grade remedy,

They Heard Miss Tucker.
We) recently had the pleasure of
meeting Mr. C. H. Saylor, who is
in this section representing the
Barney A Smith Car Co., of Day-
ton, Ohio. Mr. Saylor’s head¬
quarters are at Heartpine for the
present. On Wednesday of last
week lie v a 9 instrumental in
chartering a special train and ac-
eonipanying a party of about tlur-
ty over the South Georgia road to
Quitmajn, to attend the revival
being conducted by the noted Bi.
ble reaugr, Miss Tucker. It was
quite a nice trip and was greatly
enjoyed My the entire party. Miss
Tucker’s jwork is creating a pro-
found impression and thousands
heard h*?r exhortations during
her work in Quitman.
u bast winter I was confined to
my bed with a very bad cold on
the lungs. Nothing gave me re-
lief. Finally my wife bouglff a
bottle of One Minute Cough Cure
that effected a speedy cure. 1
cannot sneak too highly of
excellent remedy.” -Mr, T. K.
Houseman, Pa,
County Matters.
Hon, F. M. Shaw, of the Board
of County Commissioners, drop¬
ped in to see us a few days ago
find talked interestingly of coun¬
ty affairs. Air. Shaw is a eonser-
vative citizen and business man
but at the same time he desires
to see our county take a higher
stand in her public institutions.
One of the pressing and impera¬
tive needs of the county is a new
jail. The county’s population,
wealth and business has more than
doubled since the present inade¬
quate structure was built. Mr.
81iatv thinks the county should
build a new brick jail with room
an I cells enough to relieve
the usual crowded and unhealthy
conditions. The failure of the
last grand jury to levy a larger
tax for the jail fund may cause
serious delay in beginning this
work, although the Commission¬
ers have not finally passed upon
it.
Mr. Shaw thinks that it would
lie a wise investment for the coun-
tv to organize a- county chain
gang and work convicts upon the
public highways and especially
upon turnpikes approaching
streams that have to be bridged,
In many places the bridges could
be considerably shortened amt in
a few years time thousands of
dollars would be saved in the
county’s favor. The public roads
are not up to Mr. fcjftaw’s stand¬
ard of excellence and be will la¬
bor for their continued improve¬
ment.
Mr. Shaw stands for the best in¬
terests of the county in these po¬
sitions and we heartily commend
them to a more general consider¬
ation.

LENOX LIVING.
The editor of The News spent
a few hours very pleasantly in
Lenox lust week taking orders for
and delivering job work, The
fanners were all at \york and the
merchants were taking things
eas X* 1 here are numerous evi-
fences of grow th and piosperity
Di and around the town which is
decidedly on the up guide. Lenox
has a number of eneigetic busi-
ness men who are making a strong
pull to control the business of
that section and will do so or
know the reason why. We were
under special obJigatious to Mr.
M. S. Shaw while there and vere
agreeably surprised to know that
he had such a nicely appointed
and up-to-date drug store:
You cannot enjoy perfect health
rosy cheeks and sparkling eyes if
your liver is sluggish and your
bowels clogged. DeWitt’s Little
Early Risers cleanse the whole
system. They never gripe. Pee¬
ples & Tygart.
STREET CONCERT.
The large crowd in town was
given a pleasant surprise last Sat¬
urday afternoon. Prof. Harts
field called the band boys togeth¬
er and gave a street concert,
lasting half an hour. The general
comment was highly flattering
but not over drawn, for the mem¬
bers of the band have been hard
at work for several weeks and
made splendid progress.
They mean to keep this up f< ^
some time and in due season ’ Vlil

Primitive Services Sunday.
The staunch old Primitive Bap¬
tists worshipped Saturday and
Sunday at Salem church here.
They have been using some other
day for the last several appoint¬
ments and were glad to get back
to their old day. Good congrega¬
tions were at eaeh serviee. though
the rain Saturday morning kept
some away. Elder Wetlie ring ton
the new pastor, is an able ex¬
pounder of the doctrine and is in
much favor with hi* congregation.

Good Church Music.
We rise to remark upon the ex¬
cellence of the music furnished at
the different churches and Sunday
schools in our progressive little
city. A few years ago it was al¬
most impossible to enlist the in¬
terest of the young people in
church music. Now the choirs
are usually full and the services
of several good organists are a-
vailable at each service, making
the gong service a splendid feat¬
ure at each gathering. Verily
they “make a joyful noise unto
the Lord.”

Presbyterian Services Sunday.
Rev. J. B. Cochran, the Pres¬
byterian pastor, tilled his regular
appointment Sunday. His mouth
lv visits are anticipated with
much pleasure by his growing
cougreatiogn and the work seems
to be prospering under his charge.
The announcement was made at
the morning service that an old
debt of more than three hundred
dollars had been paid off this
year ’and that the church is en¬
tirely free of incumbrance. The
morning lesson was -a deduction
drawn from the enquiring young
man who wanted to know of the
Savior what good things he might
do to inherit eternal life, and the
words were: What like I yet?
The evening discourse was a new
presentation of the old story of
thi> prodigal sun. The tender pa¬
thos and earnest entreaties of the
speaker enlisted the interest and
sympathy of his hearers and good
and lasting impressions were
made.
