MR. RHODcS WAS DROWNED.
His Wife and Others Looked on
as He Went Down,
Quitman, (ia.. May *27.—Mr.
Herbert C. Rhodes was drownel
in the WithLieoschee river tins-
afternoon at Morton’s Finding,
seven mil as from Quitman.
Mr. Rhodes went to the rivei

the river when the boat capsized

to swim, wejrt down with lus
wife and the other members of
the party looking on but helpless
to aid.
Mr. C. T. Tillman could not
*wim, but managed to save him-
eelf from drowning by holding to
some snag-i in the river.
Mr. J. P. Til'man went to the
rescue of Mr. Rhodes, but wa-
umible to give any assistance.
A messenger was hurriedly s<m
to town for a physician and help.
Drs, Gaul den and Felder, with
large pirty, went to the scene
And the body was fished inm the
bottom of the river at a depth of
ten feet. Life was extinct,

Mr. Rhodes was a young man

Baltimore’s Mayor Suicides Two
Weeks After Wedding.
Rattimore, Md,, May 30.—
Mayor Robert M. Me Lane of this
city shot and killed himself this
