■ The Freight Rales.
■In conversation with an intelli-
lince, ■ent, tlf-ughtful man » few days
the question of freight
rateii w;)8 mentioned and he
fihoWod that the rates in Georgia
nro h good deal higher than *be-
where, that lie could have article?
shipped from n northern state for
si bout a third of what it postg ijyn
to ship things from here up there,
lie believes and the News agrees
With bin}, -hat theremught to be
some concerted action taken by
the business men and manufac¬
turers throughout Georgia in the
matter and that the Boards of
Trade and other organizations
pug IF to up the tight Win lh
there are no such organizations
flio business men and citizens
generally ought to become inter¬
ested.
Tlip gentleman in question be¬
hoves thqt the high freight rates
prevent upiny manufacturing es-
taWUshmwdtsfrom locating m this
section and thinks that, with an
equitable and just rate many new
enteri r sea would spring up.
At lan ta Journal is i yr n
a great fight for t he people. C s -
Georgia ought to help.
Charges not Proycff*
ly the trial of Capt. '.Vestbrook
at Albany this week the charges
lqado agaiiyst him were not sus
fained. There was no evidence
to show that lie had beep drun k
while on duty, that lie §jo|e u bot¬
tle of whiskey, or that he was
guilty of a grosser crime. The
affidavits which Dr. Broughton
planned to have were not put in
evidence. The chief admitted
that lie had drank while on duty.
A fine of $50-00. was imposed.
? People, of pourse, will have
different qpjnioqSj hqt it seems
to us that Dr. Broughton made a
grievious mistake in' miking
ch; ?ges whig}} thp evidence failed
to support. If Capt. Westbrook
had made such charges against
the preacher lie wquld have had
incurred the ppinny of many.
AVc will not say what the minis¬
ter ought to do. If we were in
his place we would apologize to
Gapt. Westbrook who and the noble
Wtjrivui beais his name.

Mr. L. L. Long j..^ returned from
White Springs, Fla.
in Loving RemenUfraiKF of Tom
Wingate.
Tom lias gone to live wirli .Jesus,
Iu that Iau<l of bliss above.
Gone to dwell and bask forever,
In the funshine of His love.
He has gone to join the angels
la the Helen’s up above,
(ill! _ We miss him, how we miss him,
Our own, our dear sweet lcve.
He has gone and left us mouruing.
Mourning over his sad, sad death,
He has gone to join the angels
Iu that home of sweetest rest.
But his trials and tronldes art; ended,
Iu this sinful world below,
He has goi*a to join God's children
Iu the shining streets of gold.
Ai*d our i s oh! so lonely,
Since our darling passed aw ay
And our hearts are deep with sorrow.
Since that one dark, sad day.
Lingering Drinking by the crystal river,
'NT-ath of its waters sweet,
the tree of life reclining
Walking through the golden street?.
Oh! we sadly miss the smiles
Of that voice so sweet and clear,
But he waits to gladly greet ris
In (hose mansions over there.
And though are hearts are all
and torn
And we feel that hi?place, none can
We would not recall that spirit to
Nor question the Father’s will.
Here we'll sec those sweet smiles
Of that face so white no more,
But they only wait to greet us
On that bright and happy shore,
In 'he last departing moment,
Which Brought a smile up on his brow,
assures ns that in Heaven
lie is resting sweetly now.
And he is basking iu the sunlight,
With loved ones gone before
In this world of sin and sorrow,
Never to bo no more .
Tli 'ti while the ceaseless ages roll
No niore the parting kiss he given,
We’il join together iti the fold,
Around the throne with the Christ in
Heaven.
Written by a friend who loves him.
