Our bunch of orchids this
week Is handed out to a group
of men who donate their time
to save our lives and property
when physically possible - our
firemen.
The volunteer firemen in But
ler were called and responded.
These men, 15 In number, make
$3, for each drill or fire they
attend or $4 if the fire is big
enough to hook onto a main
as in the Byrd-Jarrell fire a
few months ago.
How many of you would riskf
your neck for $3? And I found
that they don’t even accept that.
The money goes into a fund for
use whenever needed. The -
Manchester fireman who was
burned in the gas fire is $100
friends and relatives.
Mrs. J. C. Huddleston of
Woodland, sister of the bride,
was matron of honor. She wore
a street-length dress of green
eyelet with matching hat and
her corsage was of carnations.
The bride, given in marriage
by her father, was gowned in
white silk organza over taf
feta with a fitted bodice and full
skirt. A short veil was held by
a small hat and she carried a
white Bible topped with an or
chid showered with tuberoses.
Mrs. Howard Blalock, aunt of
the groom cut the cake. As
sisting her at the bride’s table
were Cherre and Diane Gault
ney and Sandra Harris.
Following the reception the
couple left for a trip to the
mountains of Tenn. After their
return they will make their
home near Roberta.

richer because of this fund.
Other projects are planned
and will be publicized in the
near future.
Fighting alongside the city
firemen was the Taylor County
department. Warden Wanza
Davis and the men from the
Public Works Camp were right
in the thick of it as they are
each time we have a fire in the
county. Much credit is due them
for the fine work they do.
And finally, though they
weren’t at the fire scene, the
Reynolds Volunteer firemen
were called and were on stand
by, ready to go to either town.
■They were protecting, the towns
so that the Butler Department
might go to Rupert.
Our brickbat of the week is
one passed on to some vandals
in our area. Although the car
toon of the week is poking fun at
how candidates have plastered
every telphone pole, fence post,
road sign, etc. with campaign
literature, the fact remains that
these things cost money and are
property.
Therefore, we do think that
the person or persons involved
in defacing the Sanders signs,
not once but twice, on the east
and north sides of Butler, de
serves not one but a whole
truckload of brickbats.

The rural scenes are chang
ing fast. Much of the resi
dential,industrial and commer
cial expansion beyond city lim
its has been speeded by the
mere fact that dependable elec
tric service from a rural elec
tric co-op is already there!
City workers can enjoy the
advantages of country living,
with all city conveniences.
Schools, churches, farms and
industry all benefit — direct
ly or indirectly — from the
low-cost electricity first made
available in the rural areas,
on an area coverage basis, by
electric co-ops.
Electric co-ops, constantly
faced with the increasing de
mands for electric power from
their Members, must heavy-
up lines . . . rebuild lines . . .
and to do this they must con
tinue to serve the areas they
have developed in good faith.
And steps must be taken to
insure a continuing source of
electric power ... at rates
consistent with their security
. . . for these Member-owned
businesses are the one sure
source of future low-cost elec
tric service for millions of
Americans . . .

On Aug. 26, 1937, W. A. Payne began ginning with an
old model Lummus Gin with a capacity of two bales per
hour. The gin was located near the depot. Ginning season
lasted four to five months, from August until Christmas.
In 1941, Mr. W. A. Payne became ill. W. S. Payne, his
son, came io Taylor County and took over the ginning op
eration.
In 1943, a Gullett gin was installed that ginned three to
four bales per hour. Farmers were still picking cotton by
hand. This gin was in operation until it burned in 1951.
A new GulleR gin was installed at a new location be
tween Highway T9 and the Aairport, near the railroad in
1952. This gin was in operation until recently.
This year a new high capacity Lummus 88 was install
ed. It has a capacity of 8 to 10 bales per hour and is
equipped with automate ccttcn feeder and double lint clean
er. This gin can handle hand or machine picked cotton.
Thus, Payne Gin and Warehouse is equipped to keep up
with the progress of Taylor County.
