This is evidenced by the fact that the acreage burned per fire is lower in Georgia than in any neighboring state. Even so, we should all do our part in controlling all fires on or near our farm. Fire prevention is our real problem. Even if fires are put out quickly, the large number of fires we have each year do considerable damage. Georgia led the nation in 1961 with over 8,800 wild fires. Taylor County had 38 fires during 1961. Geor gia had more than 56,000 acres burned. We suffered losses on 183 acres. These are some figures we shouldn’t have to live with. What causes all these fires? Is It lightning, "fire-bugs”, trains, hunters? These are some of the causes, but our number one cause is debris burning. This is one cause we can all do something about. Debris burning is nothing more than burning brush piles, trash, or other discarded materials. Quite often this is done near the house with the idea in mind that is can be eqsily watched. This is a good idea, but too often we become occupied with other activities and the fire •blows or spreads into nearby fields or woods. Debris burn ing causes more than twice as many fires as our number two cause, smokers. Let us all be a little more fire conscious. The next time you burn debris, plow around the area or at least rake any com bustible material such as leaves or grass away from the burn ing area. Watch the fire, you can never tell when a puff of wind may blow a burning ember away from the fire. Smokers, use care when discarding matches and "smokes". In a recent Georgia survey 16^ of farmers interviewed said that timber is their main source of farm income. Many of the others lean heavily on their woods as a source of addi tional income and as a saving account. My next article will be re forestation which still has an important place on almost every farm. LIME AIDS IN FERTILITY A successful farmer follows his soil test recommendations. Not only does he follow them for fertilizer, but he also ap plies lime as recommended by his test. Lime supplies essential plant foods such as calcium and mag nesium. Legumes will not grow, in soil with a low or no-cal cium supply. Lime will also granulate the soil, speed the decay of or ganic matter, and the forma tion of humus in the soil. All of these are important if the soil is to be at its very best to produce the needed yields. To correct soil accidity you need to apply lime. If you correct the soil accidity you will raise your yields and pro fits per acre. So make sure you will raise your yields and you take that soil test and if it recommends liming, lime your soil.
