Water For Civil Defense "Clean water, bottled and stored for short periods of time and changed often, is consider ed a more practical and econo mical procedure for home use than is home canning. We have done no work on home canning of water and until laboratory data are available we feel we cannot give recommendations or procedures that would be satisfactory under all household conditions. More strict can ning precautions would be need ed for waterfront rural sources or home wells where it is like ly to be higher in mineral and organic matter content than BANK NOTES by Malcolm PRIOR TO THE GOLD RESERVE ACT OF I934.AU UNITED STATES AAONEX WAS CONVERTIBLE INTO GOLD. might be needed for clean city water. In most geographic locations even short time storage of well water tmcan- ned may require boiling the water to destroy viable organic matter. "The Armed Forces has rigid specifications for canned drink ing water which must be met by commercial canners. Lim itation are set for organic mat ter, pH, and mineral salt con tent; specifications are given for type of can, for added in hibitor to prevent -corrosion, for threatment to remove hard ness, and for amount of vacuum required in sealing to exculde oxygen. Most of these speci fications are not possible with ordinary home canning outfits. We know of no investigations as to what is allowable in these specifications are not possible with ordinary home canning out- specifications when applied to the various types of water found in urban supplies, and when long storage is planned. "The National Canners As sociation has some information on commercial canned water and some suggestions for home canning. Inquires for that in formation should be made di rectly to them, at 1133—20th Street, N. W., Washington 6, C. C. Home and Garden Bulletin No. 77 "Family Food Stockpile for Survival" issued in cooperation with the Office of Civil and Defense Mobili zation, has information on page 12 on the storing of water un canned, including suggestions for purification.” Water is more vital than food. ’ The Taylor County (Ga.)
