Reddish County Agent Reforestation of idle land is an important step in any forest management program. The land owners in Taylor County are fortunate in that much of our land reforests itself naturally through reseeding. There are some areas however, that need to be planted by hand or by mechanical means. During the 1961-62 tree planting season, there were ap proximately 1,591 thousand seedlings planted in Taylor County from unrsery stock of the Georgia Forestry Com mission. We are now in the early stages of the 1962-63 planting season. Let’s make every effort to put more of our idle land to work. If you have not yet placed an order for seed lings, you may wish to do so at an early date. Sometimes we hear that we may be planting too many trees. I doubt this. Our planted stands make up a very small per centage of our total woodland area. Most folks who have plant ed stands of trees are mighty proud of them. When planting your trees be certain to keep the roots moist at all times and do not plant unless there is plenty of mois ture in the fields. Plant the seedlings at about the same depth they were growing in the nursery bed or perhaps „ little deeper. I believe we lose more trees from shallow planting than from any other cause. Do not leave any of the root system above the ground. To do so means certain death for the seedling. We recommend a spacing of about 8’ x 8' or perhaps 6’ x 10’. Each of these spacings will give us approximately 700 trees per acre, a desirable number for most land . A recent survey of Georgia’s forest areas revealed that there are more than 1 1/2 million acres of idle land that is not in position to reseed naturally. Some of these idle acres are in Taylor County. Some of them may be on your farm. Re member that the second step of our six-step forest management program is reforesting idle land. some of us still fail to recognize the importance of lime in crop production. Lime pays off in many wasy’ (1) It grows more and better crops, (2) It helps produce nitrogen for legumes, (3) It helps tilt of your soil, (4) It gives health to you and your livestock, (5) It makes your mixed fertilizer more ef fective by making available the essential elements, speeding up action of soil bacteria and de creasing leaching. Soil test bags, tools and in formation sheets may be ob tained from the County Agent’s Office free of charge. INITIAL SIGN-UP UNDER THE 1963 ACP LET The County Committee has determined that the initial sign up period for reqesting cost sharing on practices to be car ried out under the 1963 Agri cultural Conservation Program will be January 2-31, 1963. Mr. H. A. Sealy, Chairman of the ASC County Commit tee, states that the 1963 list of ACP practices will be mailed to farm operators prior to January 2. The 1963 practices are similar to the practices contained in the 1962 ACP pro gram but practices beneficial to wildlife have been added. Mr. Sealy urges each farm operator to review the prac tices contained in the 1963 pro gram and to file a request for cost-sharing assistance on con servation practices needed on the farm. Under the operating procedure, the County Commit tee will give priority to requests for assistance filed during the initial sign-up period. The Agricultural Conserva tion Program provides financial assistance to carry out needed SOIL TEST - NOW For spring plantaings, soil samples should be taken now. The reason for this is that it takes about three months after application of lime for it to be come fully effective in the soil. Reynolds, Georgia soil and water conservation measures on the farm that farmers are unable to complete without cost-sharing by the Government. The cost-sharing rate for most practices is based on fifty percent of the cost involved in carrying out the practice. FARMERS APPROVE QUOTAS ON COTTON AND PEANU1S The preliminary returns from the referendums held on December 11 to determine if marketing quotas will be appli cable to the 1963 cotton crop and the 1963 - 1965 peanut crops showed an overwhelming vote in favor of marketing quotas on both crops. Cotton growers favored marketing quotas by a 96.7 percent vote of the 29,510 cotton farmers voting, and pea nut growers favored market ing quotas by a 96.4 percent of the 13,773 peanut growers vot ing. The favorable vote means that the full level of price sup port will be in effect on the 1963 co.tton crop and the 1963, 1964, 1965 crops of peanuts with stiff marketing quota penalities applicable to excess cotton and peanuts. Voters in Taylor County favored marketing quotas on cotton by a vote of 179 to 4, and on peanuts by a vote of 113 to 5.
