ing $2,306,000,000. This was
a new record.
So it certainly is highly ques
tionable if a massive federal aid
to education program is either
needed or desirable. Beyond the
huge sums of money involved,
federal financial support of the
schools would inevitably mean
ever - increasing federal con
trols. Local control of the
schools would be undermined
and in time might even be de
stroyed.
This is a fundamental matter.
School policy has always re
flected local needs and views.
Local people certainly have a
better knowledge of what is
needed than a distant adminis
trator. We should think a long
time before deeply injecting the
federal government into educa
tion, well meant as the pro
grams may be.
It’s not what men eat, but what
they digest, that makes them
strong; not what we gain, but
what we save, that makes us
rich; not what we read, but
what we absorb, that makes us
learned; not what we preach,
but what we practice, that makes
us lovable.--Francis

Although we live in an area
of moderate temperature, we do
have lots of rain. Weather, how
ever, is not the only reason for
owning a dryer. The con
venience of being able to wash
and dry clothes at any time of
day or night is worth a lot.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY - Looking a little doubtful about all the
excitement, Little Miss Tonya Williamson, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. James Williamson, prepares to celebrate her first birth
day. The gay pink and white cake was made especially for the
occasion by her grandmother, Mrs. Pearl Jarrell. Tonya is
hoping that her Uncle Sonny (David M. Miller) who is stationed
with the Air Force in Cheyenne, Wyoming, will recognize her
picture. He has never seen his only niece.
