There’s a big difference in
home sewn and commercially
produced permanent press gar
ments. In making ready-to-
wear the garment manufactur
er starts with a fabric to which
a finish has been applied, but
one which has not been cured
— this means heat-set. After
the garment is constructed it is
then heat-set or cured in a bak
ing oven or with pressing equip
ment that has an extremely high
heat setting.
The yard goods you purchase
have had the finish applied and
have been heat-set--they are
said to have been pre-cured.
The fabric has a built in re
sistance to creases that makes
it difficult for the home sewer
to obtain sharp edges at hem
lines, and crisp permanent
pleats or flat seams.
Experimental work is being
done by the fabric industry and
manufacturers of ironing equip
ment to solve the problem of
inadequate heat and pressure
in home equipment to cure the
home-sewn garment. In the
meantime, you must rely on pat
tern selection and adjusted sew
ing techniques to help with your
home sewing dilema.
At present, permanent press
yard goods make up best in
simple garments with straight
lines, a minimum number of
seams, and few details. Shifts,
shells, A-line dresses and jum
pers are good.
Avoid frilly, complicated
styles also fullness in sleeves
and other shaped areas. Re
member — fullness cannot be
steamed or pressed out; there
fore, before cutting the fabric
it may be advisable to alter
the pattern to remove some of
the fullness from areas such
as the sleeve cap. But be care
ful not to make the sleeve too
night! It’s easy to do.
Use mercerized cotton (#50
or 60), nylon, polyester, or
“polyester core” thread pre
shrunk zippers and inter
facings. Select tape, interfac
ings and lining fabric should
have the same ease-of-care
qualities as the garment fa
bric.
Relax stitch tension to re
duce chances of seam puck
ering when the garment is laun
dered. Tension on both spool
and bobbin feed should be ad
justed for minimum “grab.”
Have the presser foot resting
lightly on the fabric, with just
enough pressure to feed it
through. Guide the fabric gent
ly. Don’t pull or force it. Ease
the sipper into the placket area
to help reduce puckering.
A3 with any fabric, pressing
during construction, as well as
when garment is completed, is
advisable. Use a hot iron, first
trying out temperature on a
test swatch. Steam may be de
sirable. Use a steam iron, or a
dry iron over a damp cloth.
Since permanent press fabrics
are highly resistant to creas
ing, use heavy pressure and
steam at the hem and when
opening seams. Give the fin
ished garment a final pressing
on the right side.
