glass ornaments and white lights, and it took my mama weeks to
get that task done, and she didn’t want any help! Then, we had
a live tree in the don. This one was mine and Daddy’s, It had
multi-color lights and any type of ornaments we wanted. It only
took us a few hours to decorate ours. It definitely was not per-
fect-but it was beautiful, still!
When I think of Christmas trees, a couple of stories from my
childhood always come to mind.
My grandparents, Mam and Pa, always waited until mv Christ
mas break to get their tree, I spent my two-week Christmas
break with them (we didn’t live in Taylor County when I was
young). As soon as I arrived, Pa and I headed to the woods and
cut down a cedar tree. What I remember most are those lights.
They were the old fashioned kind. They were shaped like little
lantern candles, and when they heated up, the liquid in the lights
bubbled. They were amazing.
Well, Mam and Pa had a big of yellow tabby cat, named Goldie,
and apparently, Goldie did not want that Christmas tree in the
house. Every time we got the tree decorated, Goldie went up the
middle of it and pulled it down-to the ground. Mam was an
extremely easygoing person, so the first few times Goldie downed
but Mam didn't care one bit, and Goldie didn’t pull the tree down
again!
My Nannie and Gramps lived in Centerville. They were my
great aunt and uncle. They had no kids, so they were truly like
grandparents to me! We always had Christmas with them the
week before Christmas. Nannie decorated the house, cooked a
huge Christmas dinner, and Santa Claus visited me at their
house. It was wonderful.
Well, one year, just as we were pulling up in the driveway, Nannie
opened the door and chunked the tree out in the yard! She had
gotten irritated trying to make the tree stand up m one of those
little metal stands. You know the old ones, where you had to
tighten three screws just right for the tree to stand up straight?
Nannie couldn’t get the tree to stand up straight and got mad.
She said she was through with that tree and threw it out the
door. (It wasn’t too long before Gramps was bringing the tree
back in, because this rotten little girl wanted the tree up, and
Nannie had calmed down.) With my daddy’s help, the tree went
back up and was almost straight!
Christmas trees are awe-inspiring. It doesn’t matter if they are
perfect, or not! They usher in the Christmas season!

Marketplace
Here it is December in the year of our Lord Jesus Christ
2021,
Multicolored lights abound in Butler, Reynolds, and nearby
towns and cities, Workmen in those places have already put
on display icons of Santa Claus, Rudolph the red nosed rein
deer, Frosty the snowman, and festively adorned trees. There
are even a few places that display nativity scenes.
Some businesses even have Santa Claus in residence to hear
children recite what toys they want him to deliver to them on
Christmas Day.
Thomaston has its Christmas Lane, a neighborhood where
we can drive through and enjoy the sights and sounds of the
season.
The good folks at Bethel Congregational Methodist Church,
1516 Thomaston Highway, Butler are hosting an authentic,
interactive, and immersive Christmas experience from 6 until
9 PM each night Saturday, December 11 and Sunday, Decem
ber 12, It is an excursion titled Journey Through Bethlehem, a
sensory experience like that ofMary and Joseph, a young couple,
might have experienced when “In those days a decree went out
from Caesar Augustus that the entire inhabited earth should
be taxed. This taxation was first made when Quirinius was
governor of Syria. And everyone went to his own city to be
taxed,” as the Apostle Luke wrote in the Bible.
“So Joseph also departed from the city of Nazareth in Gali
lee to the City of David which is called Bethlehem, in Judea,
because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be taxed
w'ith Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.'’
Talented and gifted people of Bethel created a complete vil
lage that will immerse visitors in sights, sounds, and aromas
of a live ancient marketplace. There, visitors can expect to
meet village craftsmen, Roman soldiers, and live animals.
Food vendors will offer free samples of freshly caught and
fried fish, cheese makers will tempt taste buds with their prod
ucts, and produce vendors will freely give of their commodi
ties. Other edibles will be in abundance, as well.
At the edge of the market, visitors will board trollies that
will travel deeper into the City of Bethlehem, while hearing
the narrated Christmas story.
There will be a stop at city hall for the census registration
and paying of taxes (freely provided at journey’s start}.
Don’t expect any colored lights, cut outs of Santa Claus,
Rudolph the red nosed reindeer or even Mickey Mouse dressed
in a red outfit trimmed in white fur.
The Journey Through Bethlehem has no trappings of the
secular Christmas season, it is an engaging event that Luke
wrote of: "So while they were there, the day came for |Mary|

to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn Son, and
wrapped Him in strips of doth, and laid Him in a manger,
because there was no room for them in the inn.
“And in the same area there were shepherds living in the
fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And then an
angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory oflhe Lord
shone around them, and they were very afraid. But the angel
said to them, ‘Listen! Do not fear. For I bring you good news
of great joy, which will be to all people. For unto you is bom
this day in the City of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord,
And this will be a sign to you: You will find the Baby wrapped
in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.””
Th^ Journey Through Bethlehem promises to be an inspira
tional ride.
For as Luke wrote, “Suddenly there was with the angel a
company oflhe heavenly host praising God and saying,‘Glory
to God in the highest, and on earth peace, and good will to
ward men.’
“When the angels went away from them into heaven, the
shepherds said to each other, ‘Let us now go to Bethlehem
and see what has happened, which the Lord has made known
to us.’
“So they came hurrying and found Mary and Joseph, and
the Baby lying in a manger. When they had seen Him, they
made widely known the word which was told them concern
ing this Child. And all those who heard it marveled at what
the shepherds told them. But Mary kept all these things and
pondered them in her heart.”
Visitors arriving at the marketplace might be as Luke wrote,
“...returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they
had heard and seen, as it had been told them.”

happens when I die?” The funerals of Neanderthals in
100,000 B.C, involved placing food, weapons, and personal
belongings with the deceased — much like the ancient pha
raohs who entombed themselves with things they desired
in the afterlife. Such preparations by prehistoric genera
tions indicate the belief in an afterlife. Tbday, all humans
still possess a strong quest for immortality.
The single greatest mystery that humans face is death and
whether or not life extends beyond the grave? The doctrines
of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism teach that the only part
of the human species that survives death is the soul. In
sharp contrast, Buddhism does not believe that humans
have souls.
Many Christians, Jews, and Muslims believe that the dead
will lie sleeping in their graves until the last judgment.
Others in these same faiths maintain that judgment is pro
nounced immediately after death. In Hinduism, its adher
ents believe they go through an endless cycle of deaths and
rebirths on earth until they reach the glorious state of‘Nir
vana’ wherein all misdirected desires are extinguished. At
that point, they are absorbed into the Universal Soul called
Brahman. Roughly a half of Hindus, Buddhists and Jews
believe in heaven. And about a third of these same faiths
believe in hell.
All major religions believe that, after the spirit has de
parted the body, it moves to another existence. Some faiths
contend that the soul either ascends to paradise or descends
into hell. Other faiths seek rebirth into another physical
body and hope to join their God in eternity. Christianity,
Islam, and Judaism envision a resurrection of the spiritual
body at the time of final judgment. Generally speaking, the
soul is of greater value than the physical body. The mate
rial shell within which humans dwell during their lifetimes
is nothing more than dust into which God has breathed the
breath of life. The physical body is a temporary possession
that a human has here on earth.
Christianity teaches that the sinless Christ paid the ulti
mate price for our sins by dying on the cross. In order to
achieve salvation, we must repent of our sins, turn from
our wicked ways, and place our faith in Jesus Christ-be
coming new creatures in Christ.
When a Christian passes from this life, his/her soul is be
lieved to go directly to heaven to be with the Lord. This is
based on Jesus telling the penitent thief on the cross: “This
day, you will be with Me in paradise” (Luke 23: 39-43). Chris
tianity teaches that on one future day, Christ will descend
from heaven to raise believers from their graves —their souls
coming down from heaven to reunite with their bodies, Their
raised bodies, according to I Corinthians 15: 35-49, will be
superhuman, spiritual bodies. After the dead in Christ rise
first, the saved who are still alive on earth will join them in
the clouds. And they shall forever be with the Lord. (I
Thessalonians 4: 13-18).
Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you, and I will come
again to receive you so that where I am you will be also”
(John 14: 1-6).
