The Moores and Kirkseys had a wedding on their minds for the
entirety of 2021, so I’ll end the year with a few “takeaways” from
the experience. I’ve already done the serious, emotional take on
the wedding, so this will be more “tongue in cheek," laced with a
little bit of truth.
First, and most importantly, because this was the whole goal to
begin with, Brette and Caleb are man and wife. I still can’t w r rap
my brain around that. It’s just so strange at the house when
Caleb leaves at night, and Brette goes with him. 1 know she’s 23
years old, but try telling my heart that! As far as my heart goes,
she may as well still be three years old. Ill say this, 1 sure am
grateful they live here in Taylor County!
The next “takeaway”: We came home with the traditional top
tier of their wedding cake. It’s supposed to be in their freezer
until their first anniversary, when they will defrost it and eat it
to celebrate. This is going well, but guess whose freezer the cake
is in? (You get three guesses, and the last two don’t count!)
Another “takeaway” is a painting. Artist Caroline Stroud was
at the wedding, and during the reception, she recreated the “wed-
ding scone” in a gorgeous painting. That was something to see!
Caroline is extremely talented, and that is a “takeaway” that
should bring much joy for years and years. I honestly don’t know
how r it is possible to do what she did, but that’s what she does,
and she is amazingly good at it. (I just wish it was hanging in
my house!)
I do have one “takeaway” that is all mine, and I would love to
get rid of this one—my fingernails! I have a disgusting habit of
biting my nails. I inherited this trait from my daddy. Flus, it’s
just a whole lot easier to type all day with short fingernails (and
that’s putting it mildly). Anyway, a few days before the wedding,
my daughters insisted that I get some fake nails. So, you know 1
did just that! Well, now Tve had these nails for almost two weeks,
and they will not come off! I have cut them down a good bit
(which hurt), but they are still there!
There is one thing that is not a “takeaway”—money! I can prom
ise, you won’t come away from a wedding with much of that!
Gone are the days of going to the church for the ceremony, hav
ing a piece of cake and a cheese straw in the fellowship hall, and
heading out for your honeymoon!
An important “takeaway” is the love, support, and help from
our family and friends. I’m eternally grateful for all of you and
for everything you did. You did things that I never would have
thought to do-what a blessing y’all are!
And, to conclude, the biggest “takeaway”-Todd and I now have
a son, Carl “Rooster” and Tonya now have a daughter, and Hayli
now has a brother! We all have “something” that we’ve never
had before!
It’s all good! My baby girl’s dream came true, and she is now
Mrs. Kirksey!
Here’s to a healthy, safe, prosperous, happy 2022 for you all!

Training Letter No. 5
Last week, this pundit wrote about the “Weather Prayer”
of General George S. Patton, Jr. while Third Army pur
sued retreating Germans into their homeland. Two hun
dred fifty thousand of the prayers were printed and dis
tributed to each of that Army’s soldiers on December 11
and 12, 1944.
There was a second part of General Patton’s order to
Chaplain James H. O’Neill on December 8. It was Patton’s
wish that each of Colonel O’NeilVs subordinates and the
Army’s command structure would receive guidance about
the need for a renewal of prayer in the Third Army.
Colonel O’Neill composed Training Letter Number 5, to
his 486 chaplains (32 denominations of Christians, Jews,
and Catholics). It was a near verbatim print of the General’s
monolog with the Colonel.
It is reprinted here: “Chaplains of the Third Army, At this
stage of the operations I would call upon the chaplains
and the men of the Third United States Army to focus their
attention on the importance of prayer.
“Our glorious march from the Normandy Beach across
France to where we stand, before and beyond the Siegfried
Line, with the wreckage of the German Army behind us
should convince the most skeptical soldier that God has
ridden with our banner. Pestilence and famine have not
touched us. We have continued in unity of purpose. We
have had no quitters; and our leadership has been master
ful. The Third Army has no roster of Retreats. None of
Defeats. We have no memory of a lost battle to hand on to
our children from this great campaign,
“But we are not stopping at the Siegfried Line. Tbugh
days may be ahead of us before we eat our rations in the
Chancellery of the Deutsches Reich.
“As chaplains it is our business to pray. We preach its
importance. We urge its practice. But the time is now to
intensify our faith in prayer, not alone with ourselves, but
with every believing man, Protestant, Catholic, Jew, or
Christian in the ranks of the Third United States Army.
“Those who pray do more for the world than those who
fight; and if the world goes from bad to worse, it is because
there are more battles than prayers. Hands lifted up,’said
Bosuet, ‘smash more battalions than hands that strike/
Gideon of Bible fame was least in his father’s house. He
came from Israel’s smallest tribe. But he was a mighty
man of valor. His strength lay not in his military might,
hut in his recognition of God’s proper claims upon his life.

He reduced his Army from thirty-two thousand to three
hundred men lest the people of Israel would think that
their valor had saved them. We have no intention to re
duce our vast striking force. But we must urge, instruct,
and indoctrinate every fighting man to pray as well as fight.
In Gideon’s day, and in our own, spiritually alert minori
ties cany the burdens and bring the victories.
“Urge all of your men to pray, not alone in church, but
everywhere. Pray when driving. Pray when fighting. Pray
alone. Pray with others. Pray by night and pray by day
Pray for the cessation of immoderate rains, for good
weather for Battle. Pray for the defeat of our wicked en
emy whose banner is injustice and whose good is oppres
sion. Pray for victory. Pray for our Army and Pray for Peace.
“We must march together, all out for God. The soldier
who ‘cracks up’ does not need sympathy or comfort as much
as he needs strength. We are not trying to make the best
of these days. It is our job to make the most of them. Now
is not the time to follow God from ‘afar off.’This Army needs
the assurance and the faith that God is with us. With
prayer, we cannot fail.
“Be assured that this message on prayer has the approval,
the encouragement, and the enthusiastic support of the
Third United States Army Commander.
“With every good wish to each of you for a very Happy
Christmas, and my personal congratulations for your splen
did and courageous work since landing on the beach, I am,
“Chaplain James H. O’Neill
“Third Army Commander”
This pundit believes that America today is similarly situ
ated as was the Third Army on December 8,1944; looking
over the ramparts at evil beaten back, not defeated.
Our “immoderate rain” is political liberalism, “wokeness,”
and indifference to our neighbors because of Covid-19 iso
lation.
We need a renewal of prayer for America’s revival, the
saving of our heritage, and restoration of our culture.

Spike The Ball,
Time Is
Running Out
It was the SEC Championship game in 2012. Late in the
fourth quarter, Georgia was trailing Alabama, 32-28. Geor
gia was out of timeouts. With 40 seconds remaining, UGA
quarterback Aaron Murray completed a long pass, moving
the ball to Alabama’s eight-yard line. Georgia hurried down
field to quickly run another play. As Georgia prepared to
hike the ball, the game clock showed 15 seconds remain
ing. Being insufficient time to risk running the ball, Aaron
Murray took the snap and hurled a quick pass into the
end zone to receiver Malcolm Mitchell.
An Alabama defender tipped the pass and Murray’s tight
spiral turned into an errant wobbler. Georgia’s secondary
receiver Chris Conley saw the tipped pass floating above
and made an off-balanced catch, falling to the turf in the
process. The ball lay four yards shy of the goal line. The
entire Bulldog nation watched hopelessly as the remain
ing seconds ticked off the game dock. The SEC Champi
onship game was now history. By losing, Georgia had
missed the opportunity to play Nr. 1 Notre Dame for the
BCS national championship. The Nr. 2 Alabama Crimson
Tide had survived a scare, but would play another day.
Some football observers contend that Georgia’s coaching
staff should have signaled for Murray to spike the ball.
This would have stopped the clock and given Georgia
enough time to run at least two pass plays. However, the
spike never occurred. This left Georgia with no time after
the tipped pass, As it turned out, precious seconds irre
trievably ticked off the scoreboard clock. As they did,
Georgia s chances of winning a national championship
came to naught.
The ending of this football game provides an excellent
analogy for those running from God. Just as time expired
for Georgia’s football team, time is running out for per
sons who continue to tune out the pleadings of the Holy
Spirit. Individuals who repeatedly put off repenting of their
sins and straightening up their lives are guilty of sinning
away their day of grace. This transgression is equivalent
to the unpardonable sin for which there is no reprieve in
this world or the next.
Many people love their sin-filled lives more than they love
God. Some are prisoners of their own adulterous, fleshly
desires. Others cannot shake alcohol or drugs. Lovers of
the almighty dollar cannot stop swindling and cheating.
Although the Holy Spirit knocks on the door of an unsaved
person’s heart many times during a lifetime, there comes
a day when the Holy Spirit knocks for the final time. No
one knows when that occurs, but when the sinner rejects
God’s final call, he or she sins away the day of grace. Once
God withdraws His grace and providential protection,
something catastrophic usually happens to that individual.
The lesson of the football game is to spike the ball in the
game of life to stop the irrecoverable countdown of time in
denying God. This will afford a “timeout’’ to ponder the
consequences of God’s withdrawal after the Holy Spirit
knocks for the final time. The dire consequences of con
tinuing to resist God are described in Proverbs 29.1: “Who
ever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly
be destroyed-without remedy.” Start the New Year by “call
ing timeout” to ponder the changes you need to make in
your life.
