Commissioners Hear Complaints
About Unpermitted Car Show
By VALOR I MOORE
Editor
The Taylor County Board of
Commissioners held its regular
monthly meeting on Tuesday,
May 2nd, before a meeting
room full of people, who are in
opposition to the car show held
on Robinson Road on Sunday,
April 30th. The car show was
not authorized by the County.
David Windham advised that
he contacted every commis
sioner the Friday prior to April
30th concerning the event. He
said none of the parcels on
Robinson Rd., from Hwy. 137,
are zoned Commercial for this
type of activity. He explained
that this activity is not accept
able in a quiet, residential area,
and there are other, more suit
able, places in the county for
this. He asked the commission
ers for support in ensuring this
doesn’t happen again.
Wanda Cobh also addressed
the Board, with the same com
plaint. She added that
Robinson Rd. is mostly a re
tired community, and many
residents were very anxious
Sunday, during the event. She
also asked the Board to assure
it won’t happen again.
Chairman Robert Peacock
thanked Mr, Windham and Ms.
Cobb for their comments.
County Attorney Eddie Davis
advised that the Board of Com
missioners and Sheriff Jeff
Watson are working on this is
sue. He explained that the
County did not issue a permit
to allow' the car show, and nei
ther did the sheriff’s office. No
application was made for a
business license, and that vio
lates the county ordinance. He
said steps are being taken to
enforce the ordinance. The
property where the car show'
was held is zoned A (Agricul
tural), and the event was not
authorized. A conditional use
permit is required, and the
County did not issue a permit.
Attorney Davis advised the
Board not to comment on this
issue, in case of future legal is
sues.
Mr. Windham thanked Sher
iff Watson and his crew' for do
ing a great job handling the
crowd and event,
EMS Director Abb Preston
reported that the local EMS
responded to 139 emergency
calls in April. Seventy-six pa
tients were transported to eight
different hospitals.
Also, the EMT class ended
April 29th. Eight students
passed the final exam and will
take the licensing exam in the
near future.
Taylor Co. EMS participated
in the Georgia Strawberry Fes
tival, including the ESK Race
and the NHRA Drag Race. No
major injuries were reported,
and there was a large crowd in
Reynolds over that weekend,
Preston has been approached
about housing one of the EMS
ambulances in Reynolds. He
said the County owns a build
ing in Reynolds to house the
ambulance, and the aging
population in Reynolds ac
counts for around 40% of the
EMS calls. The Commission
ers are considering the request,
Fire Coordinator Jamason
Byrd advised that the Taylor
County Fire Department re
sponded to six calls in April,
including two mutual aid calls
for structure fires out of the
county. The fire department is
working on updating the mu
tual aid agreements within the
county and with neighboring
counties.
A firefighters pension fund is
also being established.
The fire department is devel
oping a pre-plan strategy for
the entire county. Within the
next 12-18 months, firefighters
will be visiting each property
in the county, to locate propane
tanks, septic tanks, povrer
meters and lines, pools and
ponds, and other specifics of the
property, in case of an emer
gency. Homeowners u r ho have
gates and/or alarm systems are
asked to provide the codes to
the fire department. This will
be kept on file with the E-911
Center and will be confidential .
Send the code to Taylor Co
