If you grow' vegetables in
Georgia, you may encounter
some or even all of these in a
given season. The first line of
defense against insects is
planting at the proper time, A
couple of good examples are
sweet corn and southern peas.
Insects attack both of these
southern favorites annually.
However, planting sweet corn
early helps reduce the impact
of corn earworm damage, and
later planting can help reduce
injury from cowpea curculio on
peas.
The second thing you can do
is plant trap crops. For a trap
crop to be effective, you must
plant it so that it is attractive
to pests at the same time as
your desi red crop. It also needs
to be more attractive to the pest
than the crop and should be
planted a distance away from
the desired crops. Trap crops
are used in a couple of differ
ent ways. You can use it to at
tract the pests or you can use
it to attract and then spray the
pests in the trap crop. This
helps you reduce applications
of insecticides directly to fruit
and vegetables you and your
family will be consuming. Of
ten times, trap crops are also
good at attracting pollinators
and other beneficial insects.
Finally, both organic approved
and conventional insecticides
can be used if insect pests be
gin to get out of control. There
are many insecticides, like Ba
cillus thuringiensis containing
products, which are specific to
certain pests and will not harm
other insects. The timing of
insect applications can help re
duce impacts to non-target in
sects. An example of this is ap
plying insecticides to squash in
the middle of the afternoon
when the flowers have closed,
or directing sprays to the base
of the plant avoiding flowers
and other parts not attacked by
certain pests.
When all else fails, there is al
ways physical removal of pests.
A great example of this is the
dreaded horn worm. When you
do finally find that 3" long
beast, it is more feasible to pull
it off the plant and fish with it
or use the 2 brick method than
to spray the entire planting.
In the end, scouting so you
know what good and bad in
sects you have is the most im
portant in any insect manage
ment strategv.

Insect Management In The Home Garden
Insect control in the home vegetable garden can be quite chal
lenging. I always toll groups
that w r e have the ability to grow
almost anything we want to in
Georgia due to our tempera
tures and rainfall. This also
makes it a great environment
for insects and diseases,
I would say that the most
troubling insects are the true
bugs. This includes stink bugs,
leaf footed bugs, and the many
species of plan thugs. Next, you
have caterpillar pests like corn
earworms, tomato hornworms,
squash vine borer and
pickleworm. Finally, there are
the beetles like the cowpea
curculio and several root and
