Year-Round Mental
Health Conundrum
By Wade Yoder

www.wadeyoder.com
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and there would be a lot of’value created if federal,
state, and local elected officials spent a little time out of this month (as well as throughout the
year) where the rubber actually meets the road.
In years past, we had long-term mental health institutions when needed, but now, jails often
fill that void and recidivism is a major issue. Quite simply, we have a massive portion of our
population that is medicated with psychotropic drugs that they may or may not stay on (or
take correctly). Whether it is family, workplace, or law enforcement, these days, we simply
don’t know if the person we know as Charles is going to be Charles when we see them next or
Chucky the slasher.
When Georgia settled with the Department of Justice and closed most of our long-term men
tal healthcare facilities, they seemed to have thrown the baby out with the dirty bathwater
when there wasn’t a thing wrong with the baby itself f simply dirty bath water surrounding the
baby that needed to be flushed). I personally do not believe they intended to do harm and were
probably trying to do the right thing in punishing bad actors. It, however, was a decision that
in and of itself harms the individual (and sometimes people around them) when this person
suffering from mental health issues who needs long-term care, but instead gets pushed out
into the general population. The current setup only allows the critical care units to hold a
person for two weeks. How is that protecting the individual who needs stabilization, as well as
the public? The state and federal government should have worked it out to keep psychiatric
hospitals open and simply put intense controls in place that monitored these facilities,
Lots of money coming down the pipeline, earmarked for mental health care, can of course
excite and entice service providers, as well as new people getting into the field But simply
putting massive amounts of funding behind things like mental health can sometimes fuel the
problem instead of correcting it. Many of the systems (community, service providers, counse
lors, psychiatrists) and others that treat psychotropic problems benefit from the current busi
ness model, so why would they have an initiative to help legislators correct the actual core of
the issue. Local law-enforcement, the jail, EMS, local hospitals, and the Mental Health Com
munity Service Providers, individuals running the crisis stabilization units, and even Mental
Health/ Accountability Courts are where you can find out whether or not legislation and new
ways of doing things actually work or do not work.
We have attempted to modify mass public behavior and depression with psychotropic drugs
from children to adults, and now, we as a society are seeing what this approach has yielded. It
seems there is no real conversation about this, though the dots should easily be connected
from the suicide rates and mass homicide or attempted mass homicide to the massive increase
in individuals prescribed psychotropic drugs (SSRI). It reminds me a lot of the blindness of our
FDA and CDC, when they allowed the pharmaceutical industry to put a large portion of our
country on legal pharmaceutical heroin (opioids) to the point that it actually lowered life ex
pectancy in 2015.
As adults in the room, we also need to take a real look at what has been happening to our
youth. We have many who are raised on psychotropic drugs (for modified desired behaviors)
without seemingly much foresight that they will enter the age span where they can choose to
take or not take their medicine, and may add in alcohol and other street drugs, along with the
peer pressures that come with this age range. Should we, as adults, be so surprised when one
of these students (or former students) do one of two things: massive harm to oneself (suicide)
or massive harm to others (mass homicide)? Adding to this, there has been an avid attempt to
snuff out and ridicule faith in God (and a higher power that they can turn their frustrations,
fears, and anxieties over to) and create more reliance and dependence on government...how
depressing is that?! Add to their frustrations, a generation of parents who are not parenting,
who seem to not know how to help them define the difference in being Jack or Jaqueline.
Solutions: 1. We need adequate long-term mental healthcare for the extreme cases instead of
having these individuals rotate back-and-forth through the emergency room, hospitals, our
jails, and crisis care units. 2. A few well-placed military schools to give students the opportu
nity to get back on track who cannot get past behavioral issues within the home and school
Many of these children and young adults simply have high energy levels and frustrations with
negative things in their lives.
If you are a federal, state, or local official (or office representative), please take this seriously
and talk to your local sheriff, emergency room Director, EMS Director, and your community
mental health services provider. Get them all in the same room and listen to what they expe
rience. It is wrong that the service providers are going through what they are, and even more
so the individuals suffering from extreme mental health issues (as well as the public sur
rounding them who are endangered). If you get a dear understanding of what the ones at the
front lines are going through, the recipe for a solution starts becoming crystal clear. This is not
something that has to remain clear as the muddied recipe we have been left to interpret and
bake.
