ble quiet and good order, Some li -
tie excitement, however, was pro¬
duced at about 11 o’cloc 1 *, over the
vote of a colored man.
A candy pulling was had at the
residence of Senator Moseley, in
this place, on Monday night last,
which was largely attended by the
young ladies of the town. No young
gentlemen were present.
— We publish in this week's issue, a
tribute to the 'memory of our deceas¬
ed friend, Mr. E. 11. Hamilton late of
this place ; written by an occasional
contributor, to this paper, of acknowl¬
edged merit as a graceful and easy
writer.
—The Round House here has been
materially added to. The A. &. C.

The building begins to look far mo'- o

—We were presented on yesterday
by Mr. John W. Harrison, of this
place, with a yam potato, grown upon
his plunta ion in Franklin county,
weighing eleven pounds and measur¬
ing 27} inches around. This beats
all the potatoes, we have seen, grown
in this neighborhood.
—On last, Monday, onr unpretend¬
ing town was regaled with a couple
fisti-cntfs. We km w most of the
parties engaged and say, with pleas¬
ure, that they ace clever, quiet gen¬
tlemen, when free from the influence
of whiskey. JFe add also, that at
least one of the (parties engaged,
was wholly sober—never drinking
spirituous liquors at'all.
- -On last Saturday night the
young ladies of this town held a fair
at Pa3 r nes Hall for the benefit of the
Methodist Church of this place. The
amount realized is, as we learn, to he
approprhited to the carpeting the
aisles of the church and for the pur¬
pose of constructing a chancel. The
purpose of •'lie young ladies was a
most commendable one, and we con¬
gratulate them upon their success.—
! he net amount realized, as we are
told, is between $49 and $50, which
will go a good waj's toward accom¬
plishing their purpose. All honor to
the Toccoa ladies, than whom there
are none purer or better (and if we
were a young man, would sax’) or
sweeter.
—We attendedthe organization
the Legislature on last IFednes-
day, and are pleased to state that
the same was effected without any ex¬
citement or bad feeling, and to the
satisfaction of the Legislature and
peopfe generally 7 . The senate was
organized by 7 the election of Col. J.
S. Boy nton as President, Col. W. A.
Harris, as Secretary, a. J. Cameron
as Messenger, and L. J. A llr d as
doo r keep.*r. There was no opposition
to either Col. Boynton or Col Harris
and but slight opposition to Jack
Cameron for messenger. For door
keeper there was a spirited little con¬
test between Lem Allred and Ed
Murphy, resulting, on the third bal¬
lot, in the election of Allred. The
House was organized by 7 the election
of Col. A. O. Bacon as Speaker and
Mark Harden as Clerk. There was
no opposition to Bacon, he receiving
the unanimous vote of the House;
but i/» the elec ion of Clerk, the name
of the outgoing Clerk (Goctehns)
