1RW. SCHAEFER, Editor £ Flop tor
THE KAY Kit OK THE PRESS.
Detroit Free Press.
One of the old time editors of
Michigan was boasting that he had
never been sued for libel, or attacked
in his sanctum, but he could recall
many narrow escapes. Twenty-five
yean* ago he wa«* running a red-hot
paper on the line of the Michigan
Central railroad. A man named
Carson, who was running for some
county office, was given a bad racket,
and the editor received a note that if
he had anything more to say lie might
expect to receive a good pounding.
11c had a still more b tter attack the
next week, and the paper was hardly
mailed before in walked Carson, the
candidate, accompanied by a brother
and two cousins. The four were
strapping big fellows, and each was
armed with a horsewhip. The two
compositors and the ‘devil* got out
with all speed, leaving the editor
without support. He realized the
situation at once, and began :
‘Walk in, gentlemen ; 1 presume
you have come to horsewhip me?’
‘We have,’ they answered.
‘Very well. Have you thoroughly
considered this matter?’
‘It doesn’t need any consideration,’
replied Carson. ‘You have lied about
ine, and 1’in going to lie k you within
an inch of your life !’
•Justso, my friend, but first hear
what I have to say. Did you ever
hear of the press being stopped be
cause the editor was cowhided?’
•7 dan no.’
‘fPell, you never did. Lick me all
you chouse and my paper comes out
week after week just the same The
power of the press is next to the lever
which moves the universe. It makes
or breaks parties, builds up or tears
down, plants or destroys. Aggravate
the editor and the press becomes a
sword to wound and kill. Wollop
me if you will, but next week Ill
come out more bitter than ever.
There was an embarrassing silence
right here, and the face of each
horsewhipper had an anxious look.
‘it will go out to the world—to
.America, Canada, England, France -
aye! clear to Jerusalem, that the
Carson family of this county live on
roots and johnny-cake; that they
stole a dog from a blind man ; that
they murdered a pcdler for a pair of
2-shilling suspenders ; that the women
are club-footed and the men work
their ears when.they sing; and the •

CARRIED IT TOO FAR.
Salt Lake Tribune.
Yesterday afternoon a man from,
Far k City came into the Clift House
considerably excited, and inquired if
a certain person was stopping there.
He explained that the man had ‘done
him dirt,' and he was anxious to lick
him. Finding that the roan had just
left tbe tiowsc he rushed out after him.
and finding him on Tribune avenue,
walked up and announced that be had
come all the way from Fark City to
lick him, and accordingly be started
in. In a few minutes he had black¬
ened both the man’s eyes walked all
over him, and reduced him,to a gen-
eral wreck. When he had finished
the job he stood the man up against
the wall of Walker’s, bank and re-
marked :
‘Now, you d—n contemptible,
lopeared —, I want you to understand
that I consider you the most infa¬
mous whelp I ever saw. You dirty
little cur, 1 —’
Hold on !’ said the man who had
ju^t been licked, taking olf his coat.
I thin/; that after thrashing a
‘you’ve got no right to abuse him. I
can stand a licking, but I won't stand
abuse from any living man, no matter
how much he weighs. Now I am
going to lick you.’
He was as good as his word, and
started with the most business like
air imaginable and knocked his late
victor into the gutter. Every time
he got up lie knocked him down with
•blast me, I can’t stand abuse.’ \\ hen
he got through with the City Fark
man, the crowd thought he was a pile
of rags and mud,
‘Now, look here, my friend,’ said
the last victor, next time you lick a
man, let well enough alone, Don’t
abuse him. You handled yourself
well enough while 3 r ou were licking
me, but overdid the abuse.’
STEVENSON SENTENCED.
TI1K GWINNETT COt NTY MURDERER To
BE HANGED MAY 12.
Yesterday about 1 o clock Elbert v .
Stevenson, convicted in Gwinnett, su¬
perior court of the murder of Salina
C. * tevenson, was ta£en into court and
sentenced to be hanged on Mav 12th-
Stevenson weakened considerably and
was scarcely able to walk back tojail.
As he passed along the street he call,
cl out to those lie met t) pray fur nin.«,
Stevenson’s actions for the past few
days lead quite a number of people to
think that he is endeavoring to man¬
ufacture evid nee for a release on the
:round of insanity. He preten Is to
believe that his enemies are building
t rock wall around the jail. Fester
day when visited by a Constitution
reporter he answered several very
civil questions with a steady stare
that lasted for fully five minutes. He
lid not utter a word in the hearing
of the reporter. A motion for a new
rial will be heard in April.—Consti

Apples as Food. An exchange
states the benefits of apples to be as
follows: ‘A raw, mellow apple is
digested in an hour and a half, while
boiled cabbage requires five hours.
The most healthy dessert that can be
placed on a table is a baked apple. If
eaten frequently at breakfast with
coarse bread and butter, without
meat or flesh of any kind, it has an
admirable effect upon the’ general
system, often removing constipation,
correcting acidities and cooling off
febrile conditions more effectually
than the most approved medicines,
if families could be induced to
substitute them for pies, cakes and
sweetmeats, with which their children
are diminution frequently stu fled, there would be
a in the total sum of doc¬
tors’ bills in a-singlet/ear sufficient to
lay in a stocK of this delicious fruit
for the whole season’s use.’
Tackling the \\ rong Man.—
The commercial traveler of a Fhila-
delphia house while in Tennessee
approached a stranger as the train
was about to start, and said, ‘Are
you going on this train?’ ‘Iain.’ ‘Have
you any baggage?' ‘JVo.’ ‘Well, my
friend, you cau do me a favor, and it
wou’t cost yon anything. Yon see,
I’ve gat two rousing big trunks, and
they always make me pay extra for
one of them. You can get one checked
$'our ticket and we’ll euchre them.
See?’ ‘Yes I see: but I haven’t any
ticket.’ ‘But I thought you said you
were going on this train?’ ‘So I am.
I am the conductor.’ ‘Oh!’ Repaid
extra as usual.
