MRS, JONES VISITS TOCCOA,
MisTUg, Edj^to: :
I lives at Screech Owl X Roads,
Possum Trot district, over thar near
the line a’ J/adisun Kounty, down
about Danielsyi^l, purty nigh to
Tugaloo.
I had hearn tell o’- Tqckoa for a
long tyme, and I had bin powurtul
anxious fur to cum and see it.. I
wanted to see that ar new Methqdist
church with the culpalo on the top
Sjnd the long shiny windys and the
green blinds in the middle of a big
empty lqt painted white. \ beam
it said, top* as how they had a bjg bpU
thar what yoq could here awl oyur
the playcc and witch cqd b.cte our ole
cow, Sukey’s bell all holler. I hearn
also as how they had a big patch o’
ground what they called the par k,
which thay had sode* down in greens
and sot out awl about with purty
little low cusses, and weepiq' wiilqw
trees.
So I thote as how I’d cum and see
fur mi self- Cup? steer was a plowin’
*nd sister Keziah’s old man’s gray
mule had his back so powerful
skinnd up thar w&rn’t no way fur
me tqridejsql made up my mine
jest to cum along enny how and foot
it, tho I didn’t like mutch to do it,
cause you sec I’ve got Banyans on
my feet and they dp. hinder a pil-
grim’s progress powerful.
Sister Keziah she give me some
dryed up puls tu sell for her, and
Sairy Ann, my eldest darter, she said
as how she wished I would take a
i„ ng two dozen o' eggs and bye ber 1
„ ftlltm thar long wfcite new fangled
spread out ties what Mr. Jones kepes
to sell. I started off from home jist
about suq up, I got along purty well
till I got to whar the Tugaloo rqde
cqmes into the big A rode, and theq I
stumped my toe agin $ big log what
was st lyin’ out by the side of the rode
and down J fell ker wallop and
smashed eyery que o. 1 them eggs all
to fiiudergigs. exceptin’ about six,
"bich had been lade so long they’d
8°* ** r * ftr 1°^*

^ T thought I d have to sot down
and cry about it. I knowed it was
all up with Sairy Ann then about that
tie, end that ebe'U have to wear ber
()ld ya ,; er ^ 0Jle wben next she
went ^ mcctjn , j ^ ^ & mind
to tarn around and go back home,
but 1 thought *s how/had got that
close to Tucfeoa I’d jist kepe on.
It did seem as if every thing was a
sottin backwards that day cause
when 1 felt into the big kaliker pock
et I had tied around my waist I found
ou ^ how I had left the lunch what
^*0*^ ^4nn put up fqr- iqc. But I
wou ^ Q he beet out even about that,
I had the quart o dried apples and
dozen p' e *. left, so I guessed
M how 1 could aell em for enuff to
bye , me sqm _ little sweet crackers and
sum ;imb „ rb cUeMf . So r k t
straight along.
fPhen i got to Tuckoay it seemed
sach % powerful sight bfgger n ever
j bought it was, nad there was sq
^enny hoqses aqd stares and so men-
Q y f 0 ^es in the street I begin to get
powerful scart thinirin* as how / might
git.lost I /concluded I woodn’tgoto
the stores furst, csqse there was so
fflenny aa«sy lqq4in’ young men &
itandiq around the dares and on the
koraers of the streets with their
turn*d down paper collars and their
biled shirt fronts* wad their n*ck ties
St to kill, and their hair slicked back
with bar’s oil.
So I kept on down the street and
crossed over the top of the rail rode,
end then jfreome to a big white house
with a lot o. r little piazzys a rnnnin
all around it whar they sed Cusin
John Somebod/fciy lived and kept a
big board n ho,use and fed the trains -
tho’ I can t sec what in the name o’
sinse them ar trains wants to be fed
fur.
Well I tried mighty powerful hard
to sett them thar appals, bat as sister
Keziah hadn’t give me but a quArt,
and as she told me to ax 25 cents or
a quarter for ’em I fcbote as how she’d
be rippin mad if I tuk less* Artcr a
while I begin to git purty powerful
hungry, and l ’spo*:d it wouldn’t be
anything more than a litt’e naborly to
ax fur sum sort o’ suratbin’ to eat.
Fokes t! i iks a powerful site more of
you when you is naborly with ’em
instead of bein’ too stuck up and
proud to ax for what you wants. So
the next house 1 conve to I axed the
lady if she wood’nt give me surathin
to take a body’s hunger otf. She said
yes she wood, but she didn’t have
nothin’ much in the hoivse, and not a
bit o’ biskit bred. I tolje her as how
that didn't make nc ditfurrence cause
I was so powerful hungry ennything
most would do. So she went and got
me a great big piece o* awful good egg
bred and a nice slice o’ ham and tole
m,e to fall down the steps, and
made like as if she wood help me
along, but I tole her she needn’t
trouble, cause I wasn't quite so feeble
as 1 looked. She was a powerful kind
sort of a lady and seemed mightily
flustrated cause she didn’t have ne
b,iskit bred cooked.
^ thote now as how I had started a
askin’ for vittcls I’d jist keepe rite
alpng and arter awhile I’d get cauff
to carry home sq that S$iry Aim and
the gals wouldn’t have to cook none
for two or three days. One lady over
^ lar on corner beyant the hollow
S lve me some biskits and some qwful
nice boiled meat, and said that she’d
give me snmthin’ better’n that but
that they was all done dinner and
everything else eat up. Another lady
give me some tscmenjiusly fine hoe
cake bread and some cooked fruit and
wanted me to stay till she cood fry
sum meat fur me. Sh^ was a powerful
fine Oman seemed like, and she was
mightily worrid because I wouldn t
go hi and set down to the table and eat
a regulur dinnur. I can’t begin to
tell J' 011 Editor, of all the good
things they give me. One lady give
me enutf tobaocy to smolc in my pipe
for * week and anuther one give
ire a nickul what didn’t hav no hole
in it either. Artcr a while I wound
up the whole bizness by sellin’ my
half dozen eggs to thegentlemun and
lady what lives up in the big 4
kornered square ho,use whar they say
the Baptist church used tq be far ten
cents which was just twice as much
as they had orter brote.
Now, Mr Editor, I wants to say as
how I do think the Tuckoay people is
awful clever, specially the ladies.
Thar warn’t one of ’em what tarned
me away without a giviq of me
sumthin and thay all looked a* how
they was powurful sorry dinner was
dun over so thay coodn’t give me
sumthin else. No wonder so no my
tramps is alius a stoppin over in
Tuckoay, Thay dun found out as
hqw the fakes is so awful free hearted
thay won’t tarn ’em off without a givin
of them sumthin.
Thay is powerful tender hearted—
the TncAroay ladies I iqean, cause they
seemed powerful sorry about my
eyes, and asked me how long they
had been affected, and if I suffered
much with the rumatiz.
But my pen is so tired I can’t rite
no more, sq I will close.
Yourn to command,
Martbt Ann Jonls.
