Elbert Superior Court convened
Monday morning. His Honor, J. K.
Hines, of the Middle Circuit presid¬
ing, and Wm.M. Howard, Sol.-Gen.,
at his post. The charge given by
Judge Hines to the Grand Jury I hear
very highly complimented by the oar
and public. The .court proceeded at
once to the dispatch of business and
the trial of cases in their order. The
Civil Docket consumed the time of
th© , court until Wednesday , afternoon .
when the Criminal Docket was taken
un I The case " of Dr ’ B \ Henrws '
“
Brownlee Bros, was submitted to
jury early Tuesday’morning, and at
this writing, Wednesday noofi, the jurv
had failed to agree upon a verdict.
This is an action for damages to a gin
house that Messrs. Brownlee Br»s.
had rented from Dr. Henry, and it
seems to have collapsed during a
freshet, for which collapse, Dr. Henry
is sueino- Messrs. Brownlee Bros.
The business of the court on the
'
Civil Docket was of a pin-hook char-
acte^, as there was but \ er4 little 111
voiced , of the tried. ,
in anj case-
The attendance upon the court was
very small, owing to the fine farming
weather.

1 l*e newspapers of Elberton seen,
be in a prosperous condition. We
met the veteran of Elberton Journal-
ism, Mr. S. N. Carpenter, of the Ga-
zette, who informs me that the Ga-
zette is going quietly along and fill¬
ing its place of usefulness. It was
our pleasure to meet Mr. M. J. Webb,
of the Leader, and made his aeqaint-
ance. He is a gentleman of very
pleasant address, and seems to be
making friends among th tizens of
Elbert. T! e T.eader will to-day issue
an extra court addition and Saturday
it will come out with its regular week¬
ly edition.
The Banner-Watchman has had
the irrepressible Col. Socrates Pruitt,
its lively agent, on hand who has
gathered in some shekels and made
many friends for the B.-W. The
Col. meets many of his war time
friends, as the members of the im¬

scattered from the Atlantic to the
Pacific.
W. S. Richardson, the official Ste¬
nographer of the Northern Circuit,
has been in attendance during the
week and is ready at any time to do
the biddings of the Court. We find
him to be a very pleasant young man,
and he is’a doubtless fine Stenographer.
The business of Elberton seems to
be fair, considering the fine farming
weather.
There is a noticable difference be¬
tween the number of jockeys in at¬
tendance here and in the N. E. Ga.
counties.
The Grand Jury is said to be a very
intelligent one, and is pushing things
with a vim.
It was our pleasure to spend our
time while in town at the Globe Ho¬
tel. Messrs. Garrett & Edmunds are
running this house up to the high-
water mark, and their patrons and the
traveling public are well pleased With
the “Old Globe.”
There are several prosecutions here
for violating the prohibition law at
the hands of Sol.-Gen. Howard as he
has gone vigorously to work to en¬
force it.
Judge Hines is giving good satis¬
faction as a Court, and has made many
friends here. His charges are remark¬
able for their brevity, and yet they
are complete. When he has the nec¬
essary experience on the bench, he
will make a fine Judge.
