The shingle mills are just as busy as if there had not been a drop in J. CORNELIA DOINGS. Cornblia, Ga., April 8th, 1889. Cornelia is on a boom. Several new buildings are going up. The city council has levied a tax to grade the streets and side walks. Messrs King & Sellars have rented the new store house of J. C. Edwards and have it well filled with groceries and furniture. They say they have sold 3 times as much guano as they did last year, and other goods in pro¬ portion. This is a good stand for anyone who wants to sell goods. Cornelia has a new tanner)-, just opened up. They are both on the creek, and are doing a good business. J. O. Edwards and W, H. Faulkner have opened their new law office in the Bruce-Smith house. They were both admitted to the bar last court. The Farmer’s Alliance say they are going to build a large store at this place and fill it with goods. A company of six men from the North have taken bonds for 4000 acre, of land to be pa.d for the first of June when they will come to work. The boundary line;; are onCampCreek Hazel Creek and Soque River lying back near Cornelia. The cost of the land is $48,000; their intention is to build a city. They have found iron ores, soapstone, granite, a->berf.o mica. They are going to manufac ture every thing in the line of tools and machinery. 1 have some as fine iron ore that they brought to my house from the mines as Georgia can afford. They are strictly temperance men and say nothing in the line of liquors shall be gold in their town. They will build fine churches and schools. There is also a Railroad under survey from Cornelia by the Porter Woolen and Cotton mills and through the Nacoochee Valley, to Nash¬ ville, Tenn. It will run thorough the property that the Land, Mining and Manufacturing Co., has bought near Cornelia. This company was con¬ ducted here by Rev. J. C.. Jackson and J. A. Reynolds, of Tallapoosa, Ga. The Voice. MARTIN The farmers are about finishing planting corn. A. J. York planted some 5 or 6 acres in cotton last we«k. Some corn is up.- I heard a man say to-day the frost bit some of his corn the other night. W. A. Mitchell is going to try to raise 2 bales of cotton to the acre. H is egoing to put about 400 lbs of fertilizers to the acre. W. S. Peak has agents in every lo¬ cality selling fruit trees. Grove Johnson, of Hartwell is selling trees for him. Mr. Johnson is making his headquarters here, Johnson is mak¬ ing rapid sales. He sold over one hundred dollar* worth of trees last week. He never lets a man pass with¬ out selling him some. W. A. Mitchell has a slight notio i »of running a livery stable. We need something-of the kind very much. The town was flooded flrith negroes yesterday. Mat Bailey has a fine little daugh¬ ter at his house. Miss Ohla Scott has bad a right se- vere tirrm with mumps. She is n.u h fleshier in the face than she was be¬ fore. Miss Marion Looney’s eyes are in a right bad candition, It is more than likely she will loose the sight of one eye if not both. C. P. Mitchell’s little boy is able to sit up in bed a little while at a time. Miss Evie Burgess is making this her home. She is a cripple; we sym¬ pathize with her as she cannot get a- bout without crutches. She is going to school, and will continue if her health will admit. A negro boy got his leg broken while lending a ear of lumber. Jasper Fricks who has been assist¬ ing Prof. N. A. Fricks, has returned home. We are sorry to give up Jas¬ per. II. C. Black’s property is nil levied, on. Property pointed out by J. \V, Randall and Dr. 1’. H. Lyon. NV. B. Mitchell is going to Atlan¬ ta next week. Mrs. Rlicda Mitchell’s two little grandsons, aged5 and 0 came down on the train to-day. Their father(Bel- cher) carried them to Gainesville a week or so ago to school them, but for some reason or other he brands them with a card and sends them back to their grandmother. Mrs. Mitchell sees a hard time with them. 1 heir father , , ha? taken , them . from . . her several times and every time yet sent J - them back. ScRIBLEK. THE ROBIN AS A PET. But though not much of a singer in captivity, the rebin is a pleasing pet. He thrives best if allowed the run of a room, buthe is always cheer- ful if he has only a large cage with plenty of gravel, nicely prepared food and ball a dozen meal wow., dail,. If not caged n he grows very J tame; ’ enjoys coming to the table and par¬ taking of the food as well as the life about him, in fact, making himself one of the family.
