He was about 65 years old; was born, raised and

at Lib.wty Hill church.
Mr. S. A. Porter favored the News office
x\ it li an interesting visit. He thinks it would
be better to make the cotton bales 250 lbs.
earm. He is also of tne opinion that Osnaburg
bagging is preferable to cotton; it is cheaper,
and more e. sily obtained. Mr. Porter has
sold hU farm where he lives and to» s ht
near Carnesville, where he will reside. We
greatly regret to lose so good a citizen lrom

Mr. Frank Walker, traveling agent for W.
C. Simpson A Co, of tbi? cilv, met with a sin-
* n ' #r a(lv enture and escape from injury. He
was driving up the Toccoa mountain where
the road makes a sharp horseshoe curve. The
track is close by the edire of the rock where
il is : ‘>mo-t perpendicular for some feet, and
the descent continues \ery steep. A large
black snake lay across the which
fled the horses and they began backing,at the
same time cr imping the buggy so the hind
wheels turned towards, and went over the
precipice, ard soon the buggy, the driver and
hors s were rolling down the steep decline
with fearful rapidity, and destruction to the
buggy and contents, and mangling to driver
and horses seemed inevitable. 3y great pres-
ence of mind, he managed to get control of
the frighened horses, and lie and they escaped
with but little injury. The buggy top was
completely demolished.
Master C’atide Davis we:;t fishing in Toccoa
creek one day this week. Tlielish gamboled
and ‘-ported in the water as though they were
glad he came, and they turned up their little
eyes us much as to say,—‘“Claude,we are glad
to see you-” "When he threw his hook into
the water they were a little shy at first; but
they would flock up around the line trying to
find out what it was; then they would nibble
at the bait a little, and dari here and there and
play funny antics as though they wanted to
show off. Pretty soon they grew a little hold¬
er, especially when they would look up and
see Claude’s smiling face, and some of them
would jump and grab the hook. The way
Claude jerked them out was a caution, and it
was fun to see him pull them from the water
and send them flying through the air, their
silvery sides glistening in the sun’s bright
rays. These fish are called “finny tribes” be¬
cause they have tins; they also have little
horns sticking out of their heads, and might be
called “horney tribes.” The News man isn’t
going to tell how many fish were caught that
day, but the other boys must hurry up or they
uever will catch fish equal *o Claude.

1 am glad my neighbors, old and young,
seemed to enjoy Miss Willard's visit here so
much. To myself it was a wonderful joy. It
seemed a compliment to myself, but it was
really to Miss Willard, when early that car¬
riage stood at our door to take us to the sta¬
tion in time to meet her as she arrived. And
when we were there, though we had to wait,it
was only pleasant to sit in that carriage till the
train came. And when it came, sure enough
it brought Miss Willard and that new friend
Miss Gordon. What a joy it was to greet
them, and then be s ated with them, and
driving with them up to our home. Again, af¬
ter dinner, the same-carriage*and those faith-
ful grevs were back at our door to take us
with our guest to the Falls. Here we had
Mr. Mc Allister himself to increase the pleas¬
ure of the drive. He first directed Miss Wil-
lard’s eye upward^where, beyond the lofty
tre; tups, she saw llie ylearning waters pour¬
ing from their height-. We were at the foot
of the Fall ‘ IIow restful” she said, “this is
is, compand with Tallulah. One view, but
how satisfactory. I go from Tallulah having
seen and admired a number of views, but no
one to be distinctly remembered. This scene
will g > with me just as it is—clear, distinct,
beautiful—dear to memory.”
But while the Toeco i people - eemed pleased
with these guests, we are glad to feel assured
the guests hal a good impression of Toceoa.
They seemed at once to know us all, and be
identified with us. The only’' thing'wrong
was that they could not stay here longer.
I was glad Mr. Jameson and our editor,Mr.
MeLaury were here to greet those workers
for the general happiness, and show due sym¬
pathy’ with (hem in their cause.
Will they ever come again? I may not be
here, my husband may not be here; but may
it be a good time with you, my neighbors,
with you and your children. Give them a
warm greet ng, and cheer them on in the
work of making the world better.
Cakrie Whitman,

The stories of adventures with bears and

other wild beasts, publi-hed in The Toccoa
Naws reminds us of an adventure bad with a
bear iu th* Nantiha’a mountains by one of
our citizens when he was a boy. He wen
with some of his neighbors bear hunting and
was stationed by a rock cliff to shoot the bear
when it ran past him. After some time he
heard the dogs and soon saw the bear com¬
ing tow’ards him; he turned and climbed up
the cliff as fast as possible and the bear
ran past him and he escaped unhurt. After
the bear was gone lie remembered his gun
which he still held his hand.

Rev. J. C. Jackson arrived in Cor¬
nelia on last evening with a number
of gentlemen going to the new town
up on Hazel creek. They are going
to cut out all the undergrowth and
timber and grade the streets next
week; also they will build there a
large lake dam, which will cover sev¬
eral acres with water and make a
large lake. This lake will be on Camp
creek near the fork of Hazel and
Camp creeks. The great iron belt
runs through the centre of the lake,
and near its side the^ iron mountain
runs down in a sharp peak, extending
North East for 1^ miles. Some places
the ore is raised in mounds, some of
which are 15 feet above the ground.
Around it the ore can be carried to

the stream is large, and there is at

Last Saturday a popular young-

to attend church, on the way he con¬

evidently intended for his sweetheart,
under tlie buggy scat, when they
were astonished at finding- a rooster

was the , next question. The first idea . ,

they abandoned that idea and con¬
cluded to uive the intruder a chance
and he was allowed to remain where
he was. Mr. Rooster showed his ap¬
preciation of their decision by being
very quiet during service. When
they arrived at the neighbor’s house
where they intended spending the
evening, he saluted the fowls with a
cheerful crow and was allowed to ex¬
change courtesies with his new friends
until after services Sunday, when he
