Edmonds left his home July 7th to attend the Theological School at Hiawassee where he expects to remain two months. With such delightful ladies as Mrs. Newton and Mrs, Vickery for chaperons the entire party will have a most enjoyable time. With the inspiration of grand scenery, scrambling over rocks and peaks, inhaling fresh mountain breezes, they all will return with renewed health, and if possible,with ad¬ ditional beauty blooming o.i their checks. Mrs. Betsy Ilaygood who lives about three miles from this city is probably the oldest liv¬ ing person in Habersham county. No one knows her age exactly, but Mrs. J. M. Levis thinks she is 108 years old. Her husband has been dead 40 or 50 years, her children are all gone and she is alone, helpless, lying on a lowly bed in a humble cabin erected for her by Mrs. Levis. She receives a small monthly sum from the county which is given to a col¬ ored woman to feed and take care of her. Mrs. Lev's is doing very much for her,but the bur. den ought not to fall on one person.Thecom - munity should take hold,unite and contribute sufficiently to make the last days of tho aged person as comfortable as possible. The gearing consists of two small wheels with coas or screws enclosed in a box about 5 inches long, 4 inches wide and 2 deep, fast¬ ened on the axletree of the vehicle, projecting a tritie beyond the shoulder over the inner enc ) 0 f the hub. The end of ihe iron band a- round this hub is tn med mtoa flange forming a thread of a screw which turns iu the cogs of the larger wheel in the box. On the axle of this wheel is a screw the threads of which turn in the cogs of another wheel, one revolution ot which marks a mile. The carriage wheel turning round when trav¬ eling on the road, turns the first cog wheel; the screw on the a> lc of this turns the seiond wheel which measures the miles. These are indicated bv a pointer on the outside of the little box, also by a spring which makes a snap, or noise distinctly heard at the end of each mile. To make the turnings and winding of the road; a frame about 5 inches wide extends a- cross the bed ot the carriage just in front of the axlctrcc and parallel to it,and consequent¬ ly at right angles to the direction of the road. Near each end of this frame is a rol‘er;around which a paper hand moves something like a belt. This paj«?r strip is moved l*va small shaft, an exteation of the axle of the first wheel. By a simple device a pencil p >int is held firmly on the paper and marks the changes in the direction of the road.
