Ai at a camp meeting, gnawing on the drum stick of a chicken, and eating all kinds of good things; and perchance, having special prayers of- fered for his redemption. Such a ■ pleasant state of affairs IS enough to make one think it is good to be an editor. Charlie White and Mary Barnes,oi Central, S. C. arrived in the city last Thursday on the morning train,H ired a horse and buggy, went to Clarks¬ ville, obtained a license, returned here, went before Squire Mulkey and got the matrimonial knot tied in time to return to Central by the night train. The newly married couple seemed as happy as a dead pig in the sunshine, but was sorter short on scads. They lacked 20 cents of having enough money to pay the Squire. Their bag¬ gage consisted of a quart of licker and tickets to Central. But they didn’t want anything said about it in the paper, and of course their wishes will be respected. W. C. 1’, I . meeting was held Monday August 5th, at 5 p. m. in the Methodist church. Extracts selected from the Union-Signal bearing upon tho subject of alcohol and its evil in¬ fluences, were read by Miss Carrie Davenport, Mrs. \V. H. Davis and Mrs. Skrine, A committe of 3 ladies were appointed to look after the sick women which had been reported to the society as being in a suffering con dition. The proposal offered to give a public meeting the first Sunday night in September was carried. Prayers were offered for victory in tho coining prohibition contest in Floyd county. After which the So¬ ciety adjourned to meet again Mon¬ day two weeks. Reg. Seo. We know an editor who has an eye for tho beautiful, and can point out beautiful building sites along the roadside. But there came a time with the sun bid behind the Blue Ridge mountains, the cravings of hunger coining on, the last house seen, was far in the rear, and having no knowledge of tho distance to the nearest one ahead, with nothing in sight but a very bad road in front, a very rugged cliff on the left, and the angry waters of the Tallulah on the right, when he was remarkably silent Oil the subject of beautiful building sites. Ilis entire thoughts seemed to be centered on the passage of Holy Writ that says: “the birds of the air have nests,’’etc. But as is always the case with editors, his troubles had an ending. For iu the advanced hours of the night he drew rein at the house of that prince of good fel’ows, Major Cannon, where he enjoyed a good supper, and soon tucked away in bed and wafted away into dreamland, to enjoy a buggy ride over a road, from which he awoke tho next morning very much refreshed and resumed his journey to look for more beautiful building sites, and we are glad to inform the readers of the News that said editor is still living and enjoy¬ ing the best of health; but he has decided that more than half of the beautiful building sitesAhat he has seen in the last two weeks will never have palatial mansions on them.
