A PART OF
RABUW COUNTY
NOT BEFORE DESCRIBED IN THE
NEWS.
ITS IMMENSE WATER POWER.
TIMBER LANDS OF GREAT VALUE.
Splendid Country for Stock.
Burton, Ga. Dec. 22nd. 1889.
The Rabun editions of the News
have witten up other portions of the
county but this side has been omiried.
on the west side, reaching to the top
of the great Blue Ridtre. From the
sides of these mountains issue enor _
mous streams affording immense wa-
ter powers, Tallulah river runs
through ri the center of the district from
end to end; it is a beautiful, swift
flowing stream, clear as crystal; it is
about sixty feet wide at tho upper
end of the district, and probably 90
at lower end, which is some 10 miles
below. On tins river there are a
great many cataracts and 3hoals that
could be easily utilized for any kinds
of mills or machinery. One place on
the river some 2 miles above Burton
are what is known as tho Double
Shoals. These extend entirely across
the river; thoir foundation is a solid,
smooth, hard rock. The mountains
on eithor side are lugh, and a spur or
ridge extends from the mountains
down to tho water’s edgo on one side,
and very nearly on the other, leaving
room for tho wagon road which pass¬
es in some 25 yards of the river.
Right below there is an opening, and
immediately above is a strip of bot¬
tom land of some 3 or 4 acres, The
mountains around aro coverod with
an immense forest of fine timbers,
such as pine, white oak, yellow pop¬
lar, sugar maples &c.
Flowing into this river within the
limits of our district are Popcorn,Dix,
Tinison and Wildcat creeks, all of
which have good water powers.
On Dix creek about 2 miles from
Burton on tho Iliawassee road, Mr.
R. C. Wilhite has a saw mill, grist
mill and wool carder; his carder at
this time of the year is greatly
On Wildcat creek one mile from
Burton, Mr. W. L. Arrendalo has a
saw mill, grist mill and good flouring
mill, which ho is compelled a great
part of the time to run day and night
to accomodate his customers.
At Burton we have a daily mail
and two good stores.
Messrs. J. W. & E. C. Grant keep
a first class stock of general merchan¬
dise, and say that their trade last year
amounted to some eight thousand
dollars.
About one mile above, is Mr. II. J.
Lamp who is also very popiuar as
merchant; he keeps a good stock of
Ifoods, traded last year between five
and six thousand dollars.
Tli are aro Baptist and Methodist
churches near the center of the dis-
trict, and other churches not far off;
-so that its citizens can visit churches
and hear preaching every Sunday if
they desire.
We generally have about six pub¬
lic schools scattered over the district
.each year.
Tho Tallulah Academy is near the
center. At this Academy, Prof. J.
W. Foster taught for three years, and
Prof. John A. Green has a good
.school there now.
Up and down tho river and various
creeks are as good farming lauds as
there are in the county. On the
mountains and coves we have
or grazing lands unsurpassed, on
which stock get very fat during the
summer.
On Dix creek is the famous Smith
gold mining property,which has been
worked for 50 years or more, and is
still worked. It now belongs to a
Mr. Graves of North Carolina, who
gave pearly 0,000 for it. It is very
seldom one ever sees Dix creek clear,
it being always thick with tbe mud
s|uicj»J down by the miners who work
♦ here the year around. The minej
