make-up of the News this week just
for the fun of the thing; change and
variety often enliven and lighten up
our pathway through the dark shad¬

T'he old year has gone, its actions
good and bad, its joys, its griefs are
things of the past, and multitudes of
men and women who began ths year
•with high hope 1 -, lie buried in dark
sepulchers; before this year is old vre
too may be lying low with them to be
awakened only on that great resur-
tion morn.
The Scientific AmsricRn, published
by the great patent ""agency firm of
Munn <fc Co , New York, is the most
practically useful publication of its
land in the country. Indeed, it occu¬
pies n field distinctively its own: Not
alone for the mechanist, manufactu¬
rer, or scientist, but it is a journal for
popular perusal and study. It is the
standard authority on scientific and
mechanical subjects. It 19 placed at
a very low rate of subscription's per
annum, which places it within reach of
all. Subscriptions will be received at
the office of this paper.

This community was shocked and
pained to hear of the sudden death of
Mrs. Dr. Doyls, of Seneca. This sad
event took place last Sabbath Jan. 4.
She ate breakfast ns usual with the
family, when shortly after she was
stricken downbwith nppoplexy and
never recovered. She was a sister of
Capt. A. H. Ramsay, W. J. Ramsay
and Mrs. T. S. Davis of this city, ar.d
■closely related to others of the best
families in this part of this state. She
was a most estimable lady and her
loss is deeply mourned by a very
wide circle of friends and relatives.
The heartfelt sympathies of this com¬
munity «jo out to Dr. Doyle and his
family in this their sad bereavement.

by the elite and best citizens, where
they presensed hitn with a beautiful

LETTER FROM PEG WOOR.
Tubmkbvili.e, Dec. 20 , 1890.
Christmas irj 1890 has come and
forever ^ne.and when we reflect on
that day of sraietv, it tills our heart
with joy and sadness according to the
dea' i rate » f the human family.Every
second of time one person dio?, one
human soul goes to that bourn from
whence no traveler returns; he sleeps
that long sleep that knows no waking.
But even put the death rate at one
each minute of time, what a sad
thought. Since last Christina* one
year past, five hundred and twenty-
five thousand and six hundred *f the
human race lrare gone to eternity, all
of v lioru one year ago were full of
bfo and gaity ; to day gone forever;
the place that knew them then will
know them no more forever. When
we contemplate the eloae of life and
that ,ere another Christmas day
dawn* on this sin-cursed earth, an
other army of mortals'* will be sleep¬
ing the last long sleep of death, and
in that vast army we ruay be sleep¬
ing—that vast army of over half
million human beings in one year
from Christmas 1890 will he in their
graves; this thought amid all the
gaiety ofCLristmag makes us feel sad,
sa'h
Death'is a solemn thought when
calmnly considered; to lay this body
down, not for a night, not for a week,
not for a month or a ye*r, but
for a long unending eterni¬
ty; a long time. Oh eternity, how
long! End, End, no never! Zf man
could pick up a grain of sand to«day,
and a thousand years hence another,
and then ten thousand years after
pick up another, every grain of sand
on, and in the earth would be res
moved millions of years before eter¬
nity would end.
Again if the ocean had to be empt¬
ied of all the water in its basin , a
drop taken out each million of years,
the last drop would be lifted out
millions ot years before eternity
would cease to roll on;—Can we
think of this long sleep and not feel
sad?
Then why do^we go on in sin, wick¬
ed ness,'meanness,cheating,swindling,
defrauding each other, back luting,
cursing,’swearing,drinking,gambling,
oppressing the poor, heaping up
money, riches for a few years when it
is appointed unto all men to die’ and
meet ajust|God who §will judge, and
whosejverdict will bejtrue, and from
whose court there ia no appaal.
If a?l tncn’wouldjiact right, live

God made it tu be ;—a perfect pars-

God could, not have male this
world more' perfect, every sprig of
grass , avery leaf,'every tree, every
beust of the field, ievery fowl of the
air, evsry brook, every mountain and
valley, every human, being on the
earth, every star that shows its bright
face in the heavens, was and is made
perfect; but man’s wickedness and
disobedience to God has brought on
pain, disease, trouble and death.
With all the warning of t he past, all
the disasters, wars and deaths starins
this generation in the face, man gets
meaner and meaner. The antedilu-
vian world could not surpass this
generation in all their crimes. The
devil in hell almost blushes with
sharne to look upon the meanness that
«« '*> *“ r-r * 8 »«.
he is made to blush to see and know
that some men have got ° to be meaner
than he himself wants them to be. He
doesn’t waatft man to get to be such
a liar no one will believe him. He
w#nts men who can do him good sers
vice, but when a man gets to be so
moan nobody wants to get offended
at his foul mouth and lying tongue,he
is meatier than the Satan wants him
to be.
So let us all try for the next year
to do better, reform, act like human
beings, * ’ quit 1 this lew down sneaking *
meanness. IKe are all guilty &

In a report recently :xmt out by the gov¬

stated that man* descriptlous »f icems and
gemston-« have been discovors-1 iu various
parts of the Auatralainan coianles, txit no
systematic search has keeu made for an j
but the diamond. Diamonds are found ia
New South Wales and Victoria and
Qneeiiskuid, but only ia tho partial colony
have any attempts ’o;en ina.de to work the
diamond drifts. The principal diamond
fields are situ-atod at Binder.-., in tha Ne tv
E ngland district. The gorerrunent of Nov
South Wales h--.fi, on various occasions, ob¬
tained theserricesof experts to re{x>rt upou
the fields, as well a* the gems which have
been from time to time extracted fram
them, and these reports, it i* said, have
generally been of an en-couragins: nature.
The number of diamonds found in the
colony to the cud of 1387 ia estimated at
75,000, the largest one being of b% carats,
or 16.2 graiits. The dlatnoads occur iu old
tertiary river drift*, and in the more recent
drifts derived from them. The deposits
are extensive, and have not yet been thor-
onfrhly prospected. The New South Wales
diamonds are harder and much whiter
than the South African diamonds, and aro
classified on a par with the best Brazilian
gems. During the year 1887 the diamond
companies at Cope’» Creek, Dear Blngera,
produced about 28,000 diamonds, weighing
5,151 carats; but iu 18S3, owing to these-
vsre drought which occurred, the ae&rcb
for diamonds had to be temporarily abau-
doned.
