south Georgia Baptist associations, has
induced them to decide on that place for
the location of the Baptist college. This
college will be built at once, at a cost of
about $25,000.
The sales of leaf tobacco in the Dan¬
ville, Va., market for February were 5,-
479,977 pounds, being the largest sales
ever made in a single month in that mar¬
ket. Sales for the first five months of the
tobacco year were 17,027,987 pounds, as
against 13,838,157 pounds for the same
period last jear.
The National tobacco works, at I ouis-
ville, be longing to Pfingst, Dierhelfer &
Co., and incorporated at $400,000, has
been sold to a cigarette syndicate in which

An Americus dispatch says: On Sat¬
urday the electric aud gas plants were
sold to F. M. Gordon, of Baltimore, who
represented the bondholders of the con¬
cern, for $1,100. The new owners take
charge immediately. Everything will be
put in ship-shape, and the plants will
both be run on full time.
The Mississippi legislature of 1890 re¬
fused to submit a prohibition amendment
to the people, and the recent constitu¬
tional convention declined to insert a
prohibition article. Therefore the pro¬
hibitionists have organized a third party,
and are talking of running candidates in
future for every office.
It is expected that the unvoting of tho
Confederate monument at Jackson, Miss.,
< n June 3d, will be a memorable event
in the state’s history. The statue of Mr.
Davis, which is so stand iu the hollow
base of the monument, is now being fin¬
ished in Italy. Miss Winnie Davis, who
created so much enthusiasm when the
cornerstone was laid in 1888, will he
present at the unveiling.
A Nashville dispatch says: Governor
Buchanan sent iu his first veto Saturday,
being on a hill returning to Henderson
county all state taxes that may be collected
during the next two years on that part of
the Midland railroad lying in Henderson
county. The amount involved is only
about $1,000. The county had voted
bonds to aid the building of the railtoad,
and was unable to meet the interest. The
vito message, when read, was vigorously
applauded.
A hill was passed in the North Caro¬
lina legislature Saturday, incorporating
the South Atlanta university. This in¬
stitution will he located at Asheville.
That place and Atlanta, Spartanburg
and Augusta, have made proposals as re¬
gards the location. The statement is
now made that Asheville will give $150,-
000 to secure the location of this great

The Methodists of Mississippi arc
deeply interested in the location of Mill-
sapp's college The board of trustees at
their last meeting virtual v settled it that
the location rented between Jackson,
Winona and Grenada. The board will
meet at Winona on March 11th, when the
matter will be finally settled. It will he
remembered that R. W. Milisapps, a
wealthy banker of Jackson, gave $30,000
to create an endowment fund for this
college, conditioned that the church
would raise a like sum, which was
promptly has done, and now the college only
to be located, when it will soon be¬
come a reality.
WINDOM’S WIDOW
To be the Recipient of a Fund
of $50,000.
The committee having in charge the
raising late of a fund for the widow of the
Hon. William Windom, secretary of
the treasury, up to Friday had received
subscriptions is the amounting to $30,000. It
intention of the committee to raise
$20,000 more during the next few days,
making will be a total of^ $50,000. This sum

Exports of specie from the port of New
York last week amounted to $1,491,260,

A contract was executed Monday be¬
tween several Joliet, Ill., property
owners and Lewis Brothers, of Pittsburg,
and Wales and England, by which South
Joliet has secured a $100,000 tin plate
plant to occupy twenty acres and furn¬
ish a floor space of o^r 200,000 square
feet. Lewis Brothers are members of a
family who have been manufacturing
tin plate for many generations in Eng¬
land.
The debt statement issued at Wash¬
ington, Monday, show an increase in debt
during February of $2,994,950.50; total
interest hearing debt outstanding, $615,-
501,580; total debt of all kind-*, $1,543,-
109,858.98; cash in treasury, $693,520,-
063.40; debt less available credits, $849, -
589,795.58. Gold certificates outstand¬
ing, $308,108,474; $4,172,274,899; silver certificates,

A MOTHER’S CRIME.
In a Fit of Insanity She Kills Her
Two Children.
A horrible double killin'? took place
in Pickens county, near Peters creek,
S. C., on Thursday atternoon last. A
neighbor passing the place of Joseph
Dawson, was horrified to see Mrs. Daw¬
son rush out of the house with an ax and
strike one of her children several t mes,
crushing its skull, miking a fatal wound.
The neighbor rushed in and stopped her
murderous work by taking the ax from
her, and, pushing her in a vacant room
locked her in and gave the alarm. When
assistance arrived an investigation re-
veaied another child, an infant, lying
dead on the bed. Blue finger marks on
its neck indicated that it had been
choked to death. The mother is now a
raving maniac.

that sum is given. The largest salary,
$8,000, is awarded to the postmaster at
New York, and the smallest, 29 cents, to
