Atlanta has a city Normal School
to which she invites all ice teachers
of the State.

The Presbyterian General Assem¬
bly lias decided that the voice of
woman must not be heard in the
-church, literally interpreting the
words of St. Paul. This ruling was
scarcely necessary, for no one ever
heatfd of e Presbyterian woman ex
horting or preaching in the church.
* * *
Dr. Hawthorne, a Baptist divine of
Atlanta, preached a sermon last Sab¬
bath on the same subject, proving
very conclusively to his own mind
evidently, that it is unseriptural for
women to be heard in the public as¬
semblies of the church. Other min¬
isters of that great denomination are
of the same opinion; several met in
Atlanta and passed resolutions ap¬
proving of the doctor’s interpretation
of St. Paul’s words.
* * *
The great and influential Metho¬
dist denomination puts a different
construction or. the language of the
Apostle; for their women are allowed
to pray, exhort and preach in public.
Yet the ministers of that body lately
refused to admit female representa¬
tion in the conferences, or have any
voice in the ecclesiastical courts of
the church. So the prospects of la-
*dies ambitious of distinction as orators
or leaders in the above churches, are
not flattering. Naughty men.

ElseYvhere will be found a report
of a meeting, held at Clarksville to
consider the recommendations of the
Atlanta Convention for the Legisla¬
ture to appropriate $100,000 for the
Columbian Exposition. The receipt of
this report fVas the first information
in this office of such a meeting, and
the great majority of the people in
this part of the county will learn for
the first time in this issue of theNaws
that such a meeting was hold. The
News will have something to sav
about this meeting and resolutions
next week.

The 18th of June has been appoint¬
ed as the day for taking subscriptions
for the monument to the memory of
Ex-President Jefferson Davis. The
Southern Press has taken the matter
in hand, and each Newspaper is ask¬
ed to urge the people to subscribe for
this monument.
1 he editor of the News has spoken
to a number of our citizens, and it is
suggested that a meeting be called
and efforts be made to raise all the
money our people feel able to con¬
tribute. The News suggests that
bis honor, Mayor Owen, call a meet¬
ing for this purpose at as early date
as possible.

WHAT TOCCOA NEEDS.
Toccoa needs a good many things.
Things too numerous to mention.
Some things we can not get.
Ah Me!
But there are seine things \ve can
get, and we will have them.
We need a public hall for lectures,
concerts, exhibitions, social gather¬
ings, and public meetings.
T. C. Wiight’s,formerly Vickery’s,
is a very good hall for these purposes,
Bat unfortunately i.t is destitute
of furniture an J fixtures.
When the ladies attempt a concert
or entertainment of any kind, the
labor of fitting up the hall is immense;
a stage to be put up, seats to be pu.t
in, curtains, lamps and fixtures of
various kinds to be obtained; the
labor of bagging, borrowing, getting
these things together, and arranging
them in the hall is wearing to the
body, and sickening to the miu 1.
Miss McLaury has decided to ap¬
ply tdie proceeds of the concert next
Thursday to the necessary furniture
and fixtures for fitting up a hall, so
it will always be ready for any public
use or entertainment Plank has
been bought, a permanent
erected,chairs and other fixtures have
been purchased, and Toccoa will soon
be supplied with a comfortably fur¬
nished room large.enough for all or¬
dinary purposes, •
T. C. Wright lias consented to keep
his hall for the public, charging a
small rent for its use.
Come to the Concert on the night, of
./une lltli and hear beautiful music
of high order, .
