GOLDEN WEDDING.
THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE
MARRIAGE OF THE HKV. P. S.
WHITMAN AND MISS CARRIE
CRAWFORD CRANE.-A
MOST INTERESTING
OCCASION.
On Tuesday December 1st. a large
number of friends and re'atives as¬
sembled at the residence of tho Rev.
Mr. and Mrs. P. S. Whitman to cele¬
brate the Golden Wedding of this
most estimable couple and congratu¬
late them on their happy, prosperous
and highly useful life of fifty long
years.
The guests came in promptly, the
more aged however arriving first.
At the proper time Mr. and Mrs.
Whitman appeared before the guests,
the fermer saying to them, “Good
people,! take pleasure in introducing
to you this morning Mrs. Whitman.”
When instantly one of the lady guests
put the question, “Do you mean, Mr.
Whitman, that this is your
To this came the hearty response:
“She has been my wife fifty years!”
Then, intercepting the cheers, Mrs.
Whitman took her turn to cry
“Good people, I am happy to
duce to you this morning, Mr.
Whitman.” Here, instantly, one
the gentlemen put the question,
Whitman, do you mean that this Mr.
Whitman is your husband?”
replied with due emphasis: “He
been my husband^fifty years!” Forth¬
with a strain of music was heard,
leading an anthem of praise to Ged
in which all our hearts and voices
seemed to blend.
Mrs. Motherland was first to ex¬
press congratulations which sh© d'd
in very eho'-ce words and in her usual
heartiness of manner. Others fol¬
lowed. Then came the breakfasting.
All through to the end it was a scene
of pure festiviti- s >n which old and
young blended together—a scene
whieh rarely falls to the lot of friends
and neighbors to enjoy.
There came in time to be read on
the occasion a dispatch from Miss
Francis E. Willard, addressing Mr.
\\ . as “father,” Mrs. W* and the rest
as her “Toccoa friends.” Also a let¬
ter from a lady of Orwell, Vt., who,
though in fact has never seen Mr.
Whitman, yet remembers the bov he
was when nine years old and she onlv
eight; little schoolmates' as thev
were; and, having recently learned
the date of his marriage, writes: “I
wish I could see you once more—and
see your wife also—and be with you
on your fiftieth anniversary which is
near at hand. I shall be with you
iu spirit on that day, and you will
have my congratulations and all iny
best wishes for your health and hap¬
piness just as if T were with you in
person.”
Just at the close, a fresh joy flared
up as a dispatch was handed in from
a town in Wisconsin. It was from
Mrs. Olivia Johnson. Quite exciting
it was to the company to be told
“This is the mother of the group ©f
sons and daughters which you see
hanging in photograph from these
walls. Olivia came to Wisconsin about
the same time we came—she, from
Norway, a girl of sixteen. We found
great pleasure in her acquaintance;
and what a true friend >h© Has
always been.”
When the company had left, there
was a continuation of the festival in a
more quiet and and spiritual way,
when the noon train came bringing
numerous letters of congratulation
from pupils and acquaintances of 30
and 40 years ago, sucli as Mrs. Sarah
Jane Fears of Atlanta: Mrs. Nunual-
ly, President Nunnaily’s wife of Ma-
cor.; Mrs. Schaefer of Monroe; Hon.
J, R. Gibbs of Wisconsin; Rev. Dr.
Stockbridge and wife of Providence,
R. I.; Prof. J. R. Boise, of Chicago
Theological Seminary; (names which
hallow the memory of college life,)
also from others, so many that this
kind of enjoyment continued all the
evening.
All th© numerous friends of Mr.
and Mrs. Whitman, while congratu>-
lating them on having lived so long
and so happily together, unite in
earnest wishes aud prayers for a long
continued jreaceFul old age, until fU

CHIPS FROM THE BIG PLANE 2.!
M u. Editor:
The weather s sort o' cool to-night,
So I thought I wculd amuse
Myself by sitting down to write
A letter to the News.
I want to tell the people
That I very seldom fail
To run a fox into his den
\t lien once Fin on his trail.
So now my old friend “Factory Dots”
Please come from out the “Hall ”
Alth©' you had a good long star:
I cstight you after all.
I tell you what I really think
Would be the proper caper
For you and that, old chum of yours
To start that daily paper,
I think I see you ns you sit
A looking mighty solemn.
And burning up Aunt Betsy’s oil
With your “Ananias Column.”
All honor to the fair young maid
\\ ho showed to U 3 the brains ;
I really think she ousht to have
A Dickie for her pains
Another thing that would be right
To me so it appears,
That is to let me join the staff
A\ ith my paste pot and shears.
I think that if you let me in
dhere wi.l be nothing lacking,
And “ckumraie” would not have to
write
Upon the bureau backing.
t:o now I guess I’ve writ enough,
But I’ve got more to sa}',
I’ll put my little pencil up
And come again some day.

At Thu Factory, Nov. 30 h.
II. W. Hall wants to marry. He is
not over sixty, has one tooth and two
pieces. Girls make a note.
Harris Hall is under treatment for
a broken jaw. The big words iu hi>
last “weak” card did it.
In the upward flight of “Carder’
Hall in the preparation of ins famous
card he was caught in the brc< zp and
wafted awaj. Fortunately his coat
*ail became entangled in the branches
■d'atree and saved him from being
foiever lost. He was left suspended
head downward, in which position he
sway.d back and forth like the pen¬
dulum of a clock until a few nights
afterwards, when George Hitt went a
possum hunting, shined his eyes and
rescued him.
Wlie.i George saw the eyes of the
man of “cards,’’ lie thought it was a
possum [see where he was right] and
cut the tree down. The “busted - ’
place* hare been glued up and Harris
may live to write another card. But
he says if he does he will either use
less elevating laaguage or puts mus¬
tard seed in his pocket to hold him
down.
’Tis said after H. \V. Hill finished
his card “that he lolled back in his
easy chair, his 2b center all aglow,
strakirig his flossy mustache, he gave
a satisfied grunt and said : ‘Harris,
old fell, that's better than I thought
you could do; a few more liice that
will convince these mount tin hoosiers
that you hail from Thomas ville, and
have more sense under that facetious
top-knot of yours than there is in a
cow pen full of the punkin heads in
these parts. Go it ray r boy, and you
will make your’ mark in the world
Any one can tell that by the length
of your flaxen mane and tail.”
JamesBright is not a polish,ed dude
nor does he boast of the educational
trimmings of Furniture Worker, but
when he is swapping fire with another
fellow, he don’t have to rush in under
the caption “A Card” and yell 1 t;ar”
like a Comanche In lia.i to keep the
other fellow awake.
We hear that Furniture Hall will
mail a copy of his card to his grand¬
ma, not through any selfidi conceit,
but he thinks it will biiug j >y to the
old lady in her declining years to
know what a very peart bov her dear
grandsoney is, since he got io wearing
long breeches.
Hall says: ‘ Jim eagag-d me to a
wife.” Indeed, now if he did he
wishes to beg the lady’s pardon as he
wouldn't wish to do any one such an
injustice. “Jim said she is to be as-
sociate^editor,’’[meaning the lady that
discovered Hull’s powerful intellect
and by the way she deserves more
eredit for it than Columbus for dis-
covering America, for hers r as the
more difficult; task] and if that means
that she is to be your wife then you
are the affianced darling of the edi¬
tor of the new paper, you being card
editor; at the present rate your fame
i* spreading, you will soon be on the
force of a dozen or two more papers,
and then went you be a over muchly
engaged youngster?
Hall gut kind o’ nervuos in
preparation of his last week’s card.
He devoted the best part of his apace
to what had been said about Calvin
Carter. But in his» present state he is
liable to think that there is more than!
one of him, and we shouldn't be sur ->
prised if when he gets rt.ady to
off his second edition lie will
himself a whole district an < issue
order to th; Ordinary calling for a
stock law election, <
Carder Hall evidently learned when
young to blow his own horn if no oue
else would blow it for him. But in
the excitement of getting off his card
last week, he forgot to put in his usu-
al complimentary notice of the Fac¬
tory Dut 3 of the week before. How¬
ever the readers of the News may ex-
pect something this week that reads
this way: “Aside from my regular
dots last week which were all as
sparkliog and w.tty as could be, 1
published a card which tickled the
t »wn folks so that the earth trembled
under their boistrous laughter,and de¬
railed a freight train near the city,
which blocked the road and impeled
travel for six months. Damage not
enumerated wiih several districts to
hear from.

whose appetite had been restored bv
the use of Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, a t r
years of dyspeptic miserv. A tca-
spoonf il of this extract before each
meal sha-pens the appetite.

NEWSPAPER LAWS.
The following are the laws laid
down by the U . S. Government for
the protection of newspapers :
Subscribers who do not give ex¬
press notice to the contrary are con¬
sidered as wishing to continue their
subscription.
If subscribers order the discontin¬
uance of their periodicals, the publish
its may continue to send them until
arrearages are paid,
If subscribers more to other places
without informing the publishers, and
papers are sent to the former direction
they are held responsible.
The courts hare decided that re¬
fusing to take periodicals from offices
b fore removing and leaving them un¬
called for is priraa facia evidence of
intentional fraud.
If *ubscribers pay in advance, they
are bound to give notice to the pub¬
lisher at the end of their time ,if they
do not wish to continue taking it:
otherwise the publisher is authorized
to send it on and *ubscribcrs will be
responsible until an express notice
with payment of all arrears, is sent
to the pub’isher.
Publishers of newspapers can.under
law, arrest any man for fraud who
takes a newspaper and refuses to pay
lor i'. Under this law it is a danger¬
ous trick for a man to allow his sub¬
scription account to rnn on from six
months to a 3 ear and then tell tie
postmaster to mark “refused” or to
send the editor a notice to discontin¬
ue the paper.
