The Richmond & Danville
ny is reducing its expenses by
missing numbers of its employes;this
means double work for the already
overworked men who remain.
*
The Georgia members of
who have been suffering with the
grip, or some other disease, are get-
ting well; the alliance members
happy having taken refuge fr >n» th«
rough breezes in the warm and genial
fohlsof Democracy. Ton,Watson,
alone is out in the cold; ho is fiercely
buffeted on all side ; by furious
paper blasts. Poor Tom’s a’cold.
If reports are trne.General Tbomas
is getting coi.’rul of the East
nessee, and will socn separate it from
the Richmond Terminal System.
Should he accomplish this and make
h line to compete with the great mo¬

in rates people wi.i not complain, but
how the competition will help this

TOCCOA’S CLERKS.
A. G. Jones, son of the late Capt..
II. W. Jones, a Toccoa boy, born
and raised in tliiw city, has taken
a position with Edwards Si Dance,
and is thus making a start in what we
trust will prove a highly successful
business career.
S. if. Vandiver is another of the
Franklin county boys who is pushing
ahead, and destined to make his mark
in the business world. He made the
light start by determining to get an
education, and what is highly com¬
mendable, he rained the money him¬
self to pa.y for his expense. He did
this by teaching In summer and at
tending school winters, laboring for
eight years teaching,- working on the
farm, going to school, and thus ob¬
tained a good education, including a
three vei ls college course in Dah-
lonega.
Two year- ago he worked in the
store for T. C. Wright in this city for
some time, and left to continue his
studies in college. Mr. Wright was
so well pleased with him at that time
that he has again secured his servi-
ces; sh.vuld Mr. Vandiver decide to
engage permanently in the rnercan-
tile business he without doubt will
make a grand success, for he possess-
es the energy and ability that char-
acterize tho successful business men
of the nation.
Major Christian, one the oldest
clerks in this ci' v, was a native of
South Carolina. He early learned
to make shoes and worked at that
business for 25 years, ilis first ex¬
perience as clerk was with J. C.Dun-
ton at Jarrett's Bridge, lie built
the first store at Ft. Madison, and
continued to clerk for Mr. Denton at
the latter place four years, lie then
cams to Toccoa, and was employed
by J. L. Martin, remaining with him
2 \ ears; when Mr. Martin formed a
partnership with H. M. Payne he
continued with the firm 2 years h ng-
er. Finai ! y he accepted a position
with W. A. Matheson with whom lie
rem lined 5 years. At present he is
in the employ of J. L. Martin. Dur¬
ing all these years Major Christian
has maintained a high character for
strict integrity an i honesty; he is a
good salesman and is universally
liked through all this region of count¬
ry where he is so known.
J. E, Tabor. L h;s young gentle¬
man isa native of Franklin county
and has lived on the farm till he was
21 years oI<I . when he engaged in
the shingle business which he follow¬
ed for three tears. Since that time
ho was in the employ of the railroad
company till he accepted a position
as clerk with J. L. Martin, which is
his first experience in selling goods.
He is taking hold of the work with
energy and zeal, he is genial and
pleasant with customers an l is de¬
veloping characteristics that indicate
he will make a successful business
man.
Toccoa merchants do not seen o
be particularly partial to lady clerks
‘*is there is but one in the city; this is
a ^ u * e strange as ladies are found in
neHrl >’ aIi the progressive and popu-
far stores in the large cities; their uat-
ura! attractions, their superior tact
a nd skill, their adaptation to certain
lines make th^ui valuable as¬
sistants in the clerical force of ary
iitore * The one lady clerk in this citv
is
A/iss Ida Hayes', who took a posi-
tion behind the counter in her
>h«r’s store *ben still nmte , t little
girl, and lias been there about f .nr
years. She attends ... particularly , i to
millinery and notions department.
She is a highly attractive young lady,
,s very successful in her department,
and k ; s ev ; dt . nt Mr. II.yes would
fim j ; t verv difficult, probably impos

place m his store.
There are other ladies sell ng goods
in this town, viz.: Mrs. W. J. Hayes,
Mf . ^ v; etherland and Mrs. C. T.
Blnckmef, but these ladies are pro
pr i e t or s,_Mrs. Hayes is the better
half <)f her hljsband an 1 the others
being ownars of their stores, cannot
prof)erly hp c]assef] as c;erks Rnd
tlierofore do nf>t come w ; thiu the
scops of this series of articles; still
they well illustrate the important fact
that women are eminently successful
m sell'ng merchandise. To the
above bo
Miss Gussie Cleveland, who l;asre-
cently opened a small store in T. C.
Wright’s building. She is a very
charming lady, deserves gieat y>raise
for her enterprise, and the News
wishes her, as well as all our mer-
chats abundant success.
This closes the :©ries of articles on
the clerks of Toccoa. This list has
been coniinud to those engaged in
the ordinary mercantile business and
does not include the bank, cotton
buyers, factories and railroad em¬
ployes, which will comprise another
series of articles in the News.
Those who have read’these reports
must lie impressed with the large
number and high character of the
clerks in the employ of our mer-
hants, and they indicate the-very
large annual business transacted

CAPT. DAVIS RESIGNS.
HE CAN NO LONGER COMMAND TlIE
GEM CITY GUARDS—A NEW
CAPTAIN ELECTED.
Palate a, Fla., Nov. 19.—Capt.
R. W. Davis of th-?(lem City guards
iias been compelled,on account of the
establishing of a law ofii cei n Jack¬
sonville, to tender to the governor
his resignation as captain of the
v
cumpany. This fact was coininunK
cated to the guards on Tuesday night
by the captain. It was with great re¬
grot, lie stated, that he was obliged
to take this step, and to part with a
company of young men so endeared
to him by !vng association, and, while
obliged to re.-ign the office of cap-
tain, he would always continue a
member of the guards. The compa-
ny unanimously requested him to re¬
tain the office, and the firm declara-
tion of Capt. Davis might have had
little effect if the resignation had
been laid bef- re the company
of the governor. Nominations for
captain beTig then in order, Mr. S A.
Lowry named for the position First
Lieut. E. M. McLaury, which nomi¬
nation was numerously seconded. On
motion of Donald Gillis the nomina-
tion was made unanimous by a rising
vote. For the first lieutenancy sev¬
eral gentlemen ware proposed, hut,
withdrawals being in order, Mr. W.
M, Davis, nominated by Dr. B. E.
Morgan, was elected by acclamation.
Of the two new officers it can t e said
that the company could not ha\e
chosen better. Mr. Davis is an ex-
captain of the East Florida seminary
cadets, and won the individual medal
of the Florida troops at the Semi-
Tropcal, and commanded the corns
panv at the unveiling of the Davis
monument at Pensacola.
Capt. E. M. McLaury,as evidenced
bv the unanimity with which he was
chosen, is extremely popular. Him¬
self a thoroughly drilled soldier, the
wearer of several medals, ho lias the
faculty of pmpariing this knowledge
to others. Capt. McLaury communi¬
cates his enthusiasm to the rest, and
these who know the difficulties a -
tending the mustering of the coin pa-
ny at the last encampment, at-which
time he was in command, will appre-
ciate this. The new captain of the
