lion. R. Q. Mills of Texas has been
elected United States Senator; this
is a better position for him than>peak-

country.

Nearly all the sugar refineries of
the country have been organized into
one gigantic trust; should all go in,it
will Le a relentless monopoly to
which every man, woman and child
in the country must pav extra tribute.

The trip of Senator David B. £ J i l 1
through a portion of the South can
hardly he considered an overwhelm¬
ing triumphant march. Crowds of
people greeted him iu many places,
and at times manifested a degree of
enthusiasm, but probably not mere
than any other man would have elici¬
ted, who had attained national fame
and who was aspiring to presidential
honors. If nominated, democrat?
e\ery where will heartily support him,
but it is doubtful >f he is the first
choice of the party either North or
South.

Judge ^Tars liar I J. Clark of Atlanta,
has decided that advertisements in
the Sunday editions of daily papers
are illegal and need not be [aid for.
If Tlegal, there should be somo pen¬
alty both to the advertisers, and the
newspapers carrying the ads. as every
law must have a penalty for ils yhw
latio i. What the penalty is was no-
reported, except that the papers lost
the price of the advertisement, and
the follow who advertised was releas¬
ed from paying; this looks us though
the offending newspaper man is pun¬
ished while the other sinner is re¬
warded. A man who takes advan¬
tage of some law and refuses to pay
for his advertisement in a newspaper
or a subscripts n therefor, Ins a soul
so cold tnd frigid that nothing will
melt it except the flames of Hades.

The Standard Oil Hrust, one of the
greatest monopolies in the world is
broker, its \ roperliei are to be sold
and its vast wealth is bo divided a-
mong tho shareholders. Notwith-
ing the evils, it did a vast amount of
good; it furnished cheap light to the
world; not only for the palaces of the
rich and great; but also for the cab¬
ins of the poor and lowly. Its chief
managers are appro pi iatiivi their vast
wealth for the benefit of the race; the
one, Mr. Flagler, in improving cities,
building magnificent hotels and
beautiful churches; the other, Mr.
Rockefeller, bv endowing colleges
and great universities all of which
will stand as grand monuments to
their vast wealth and genor®us be¬
nevolence for many ages to come,
possibly while the world stands.

The Ftee-Coinage-Silver bill in¬
troduced in Congress makes the unit
of value the standard silver dollar
as now coined, consisting of 412^
grains of standard silver, or the gold
dollar consisting of twenty five and
and eighteenths grains of standard
gold; both silver and gold coins shall
be legal tenders in all debts public
uml private.
Any person taking gold or silver
bullion to the value of $100 or more
to the United States mint can have
it coined free of charge; or he can
exchange Ins bullion for coin notes
which shall be legal tender and re¬
deemed at any time in gold or silver.
Gold notes can be redeemed in silver,
and silver notes in gold. Ihese gold
and silver notes, if the bill should
pass, will doubtless constitute a COI1-
siderable portion of the currency of
the country. The debates on the bill
have been spirited; it is a fight be¬
tween the gold bugs of the East and
the silver millionaires of the West,
the later supported by the great tnass-
es of the toiling millions demanding
more money and less taxation.

A bill is l efore congress lo admit
wool free of duty. It is well known
that we do not raise wool enough in
this country to supply the demand.
Large quantities have to be imported;
this with a high tariff makes the ar¬
ticle costly for the manufacturers of
woolen goods, and consequent)}
woolen clothing high priced. The
bill proposes to take off the tariff,
thereby making wool cheap an ! cloth¬
ing cheap. But the McKinleyits
bitterly oppose free wool and there--
fore favor high priced clothing. Now
if it is a good thing to have cheap su¬
gar, why not cheap tin, cheap wool
and cheap clothing? The best feat¬
ures of the McKinley bill are those
which are a standing argument for a
low tariff.

A HARD RECORD.
Tibs county hns had a good deal
trouble with its t flicers and quite a
number of these have been indicted
and convicted for various malpracti¬

conduct. The county is now in debt
with no money to meet current ex¬

county at this term of court had to go
home without the stipend allowed
them.
All in all, Habersham seems to he

Oranjjea in I’ulniettn Tree*.
When we see oranges falling from
palmetto trees we might think they •
had taken to producing that fruit,
but a closer inspection will show us
a disappointed squirrel, looking long¬
ingly after the mandarin or tanger¬
ine it had dropped. It is an amusing
sight to see one of these little fellows
hold an orango and disrobe it of its
covering, preparatoiy to a feast.—
