THE CONDITION OF HABER¬
SHAM COUNTY.
Clarksville, Ga., March ‘23, 1802.
Editor Constitution.— I see in your
valuable paper of this date, iu large
head lines, a special purporting to be
from Clarksville, in which there is
about as many lies as I ha ve seen
published in many a day for the space
used.
] do not know anything about the
matter of the jail for that is a matter
to be determined by a future judicial
investigation and every pafty is pre-
to be innocent, until proven
guilty.
It is false in regard to the officers
of the county, where your corres¬
pondent says, “quite a number of
these tnese have na « been indicted ei and llIlu con- < cn
-
victed for various malpractices and
embezzlements in their official con-
duct.”
There has been only one indic-ed
co,lvlc ’ ed in ,his co,,,,t v si,ue
.
before the war.
It is false where your emrespon-
d^nt says,‘-Citizens who served the
county at this term of the court had
to no home without the stipend al-
lowe 1 them,” for every person enti¬
tled to pay received the same at the
clos-’ of the thrill, and there is still
more money m the treasury, and will
be more when t e railroads pay their
taxes, which are »iue and unpaid. The
county only owes a small balance on
the “pauper farm, wireh balance is
ihe part that is due by the railroads
and yet unpaid,
Our citizens are indignant that
suc i false statements aie published
in your paper, such publications be-
ing calculated to do the untold
injury. Our county rate of
is the lowest in the state, being only
20 cents on the hundred
worth of property. In the name
our citizens I ask your paper to cor¬
rect these statements as conspicious-
ly as they were published.
Respectfully,
B. E. EDGE, Ordinary.
