It is wonderful enough that in¬
fants of a few weeks or months
should !>-.:• kv unmistakable uianii'es-
tiilhuis of the simpler emotions of
fear, affection ai d anger. But that
un emotion so com] lex as jealousy
should appi ar so early as at the age
of ten months is especially remark¬
able, and indicates a degree of de¬
velopment at this ago which, in the
absence of observation, might justly
be deemed incredible.
Darwin observed jealousy in an in
fant of 15J months, but adds, “Il
would probably be exhibited by in¬
fants at an earlier age if they were
tried in a fitting manner.”—Cor. .Sci¬

The Some of Time in Sleep. U
A . Massachusetts e C . ,, man tells . „ the fol- - ,
lowing: “I arrived one day at a
eleepy Italian town and joined a
party of friends. It was in the late
afternoon, and I was very tired 1
had been rowing a distance, and I
soon went up stairs, lay down in my
boating flannels for a little rest before
dressing and fell directly asleep—one
of those stony, moveless sleeps that
seem to ti v e more than rest one.
When I awoke I was surprised to see
by the light that it was not night,
not even morning; but by the shad¬
ows of late afternoon, and from my
sense of having been asleep a long,
long time, I realized that I had slept
for twenty-four hours.
“A little dazed and ashamed of
myself, 1 got ready, went down and
joined my friends. They did not
seem to pay much attention to my
absence; in short, they did not act
at all strange, and when I apologized
for not having joined them at din¬
ner the day befoi'e they said, ‘Why,
you were not here yesterday,’ and in
some way or other, little by little, it
was borne in upon me that I had
been asleep about ten minutes. If I
had been alone I should certainly
have lost a day out of my life.”—St,
Louis Globe-Democrat.
