Let all subscribers remember that one in arrears cannot stop his paper. Edwards & Keese. Mr. J. J. IIowell, who has been concocted with the Lumpkin Indepen¬ dent for the last three years, is now the editor of The Toccoa News. Editor Howell has many friends in this county who will always be glad to hear of his prosperity. The first issue of his paper shows Lira to be a newspaper man of the first water. It is a credit to the town in which it is published and should receive the hearty support of all in its section.— Richland Gazette. Tx Atlanta the other day a couple decided that, as they could not live together, they would die together. While wrapped in eaehjother’s em¬ braces, the man shot the woman in the head with a pistol, and then sent a bullet into his own head. Both are Italians, and the uian has a living wife. The wounded woman will prob- ably recover, but the man is in a critical condition. The world can manage to get along without such people. Judgk L. Q. C. Lamar, of the United States supreme court, died in Macon on Monday night. Judge Lamar was born in this state, gradu¬ ated at Emory college and held some responsible places, lie was one of Georgia’s brainiest men. The citizens of several counties in North Georgia have petitioned to Dr. J. W. Spencer, the state geologist, removed from that office. They think that the doctor hasn’t been paving sufficient attention to their section. Thousands of petitions asking tlmt the World’s fair be kept open on Sunday are being received by con - gress. There are many people in the United States who are strongly op- posed to gran.'tig thes^ petitions, When Cleveland retired from the ^president's chair four years ago, he left in the treasury a surplus of $ 100 ,- 000,000. When ^Harrison vacates the white iiouse the treasury will be e tnpty. Comment is useless. Bishop Phillip Brooks, of Bos-, ton, breathed his last on Monday Dr. Brooks was a man of rare mental power and deep piety. By many he was regarded as the greatest preacher of America. v*’,. n K are glad i j to * place i on our ex- r change list the Dawson News, one of the neatest and newsiest papers of the state. The Fort \alley Leader is an ceptional country weekly. It is bright and newsy and contains no pat- eni medicine ads. Sam Small is doing some ex¬ cellent work on the Atlanta Con¬ stitution. Augusta’s carnival is at its height 34idis attracting many visitors. TBO COSTS. There is more religion in relieving the distress of the needy than in thousands of flowery sermons. * * ' * Success in life cannot be measured ** v dollars. When reasoning may be useless, when censure fails to convict, and threats to terrify, sympathy may pro- luce the desired result. Pity is akin to lovo, but sympathy is a pari of love itself. * * * Love is the purest influence that operates upon man and the most tent one. As steam, is the force that drives the shafts and wheels of ma- chinery for useful purposes, so love is the motive power that man to une'fis’i acts and deeds. Atlanta never does things by halves. During the recent weal her her citizens donate 1 thousand dollars to provide food and fuel for the destitute. But then erosity is one of the that make Atlanta great. EAST A NOLLEE N E WS. Eastanollee is looking up. Mr. C. Taylor is cutting lumber m a storm near the switch. We have been informed that a bill has just passed the house lishing a Democratic asylum at the Eastanollee switch. It is reported that the only treatment will he pure literature fresh from the pen of the noble Thomas E. Watson. Third partyites favor this measure. Eastanollee sub-alliance is in a healthy and prosperous condition. The members have opened a crop contest on corn and cotton. The ob¬ ject in so doing is to try and bring about a better system of farming. We hope it will prove a success. We regret to chromcde the death of Mrs. Lucy Already a few of the ring masters of the church who occupy the amen corner and grunt so loud that it is realy alarming, have raised a howl about the young folks dancing during the Christmas holidays. Now, our advice is to stop your foaming at the mouth, or people will think you are rabid. Dancing is a scr’ptual form of enjoyment, consistent with health and social advancement, so long as it can be pursued without extravagance; and it is hard to find a reason why the dance should be denounced. The truth of the business is the amen howlers had better raise a row about Hie whiskey they gobbled down themselves during the holidays, f t W euld be of much more benefit ^ the church and the country at ]ar ^ While we did not attend a sinffle (3ance during the holidays, heart and soul did, and we think heaven would be a dreary place not to smile on the beautiful dance.
