LOCAL HAPPENINGS.
And Other Timely Topics Briefly
Chronicled.
T he roads are said to be in a very
bad condition in some portions of the
county.
()ne kind act is worth more titan
one hundred quickly forgotten
intentions.
Correspondents will p.ease send in
tiieir communications as early in the
week as passible.

If all the influential men of our
town would interest themselves in
Toccoa’s improvement much might
b„ . accomplished. iii
The improvements on Mrs.
tier’s residence are nearly complete
id, making it one of the most
tractive cottages in the place.
For want of space we were forced
to leave out several communications
that reached us late in the week.
They will appear in our next.
There is no more effectual [dan to
Uee|> away people who desire to lo¬
cate in your town than to ask for
build ng lots two or three times wha
thoy are worth.
By an exercise of enterprise and
unity the c’tizens of Toccoa may do
much within the next twelve months
to increase the population and pros¬
perity of their town.
Our paper failed to reach us at
the t»ro[)er time this week, and we
got a day behind. Such delays are
provoking, but there’s nothing to do
under the circumstances except
grih and endure it.
In another column appears a peti-
.tioh read ?t the last meeting of the
council. It is such an unusual and
original document that we publish it,
believing that our readers will
enjoy' it.
Occasionally there are seen on our
Streets poor oxen whose skins have
been lacerated by unmerciful whip¬
ping. A man who has so little feeling
a? to treat cruelly a poor, dumb brute
ought to lie made to feel—the
of the law.
At Hartwell last Sunday Rev. E.
A. Keese, pastor of the Baptist
churches of our town and of Hart-
veil, baptized Mr. J. Ware Brown,
who had beer, a Methodist
and a member of the North Georgia
conference for fourteen years.
Wild ammals are scarce in this
section, but it is said that blind tigers
sometimes use in Toccoa. Since these
animals arc blind on both sides, it
seems that our policemen mipht
manage to slip up on ahd capture
one sometimes.
YVe are glad that our businessmen
are advertising so liberally—tiot sim¬
ply’ because this is to our interest,
but for the ‘ on, too, that it speaks
well for c f town. I eople at a dis-
tance judge of the enterprise of a
town by the appearance of the
per published at that place.
All correspondents, old as well as
fiew ones, should be sure to give their
real names as well as their nom de
plumes when sending in articles for
publication. Failure to do this may
cause communications to be edited
by the “devil” and to appear in
the next issue of the waste basket.
We are not blowing about it,
because it’s such a regular thino, but
there is a steady improvement going
on in our town. Several new’ res£
ilences have been completed recently
and the finishing touches are beino-
given to others. But while some
building is going on, like Oliver

A New Word.
We have heard of cigars’ being
called by various names, but a
Toccoa “kid” has given them a new
one.
The other night on the street we
saw a small boy vigorously puffing
away at a cigar stump.
‘•What’s that you’re smokin'?”
inquired someone on the other side
of the street.
“This here’s a shetoot,” replied
the youthful smoker, who had heanJ
the name, “cheroot.”

New Council-
The new town council was dnlt
installed Monday night, the retiring
members turning over to them ^
that time the reins of government.
May these be so manipulated during
the year as to increase the progress
of the town at the proper time and
check it when it is in danger of run¬
ning into deep ruts.
The new council is as fallows: W.
! J. Hayes, mayor; G. W. Edwards,
J. U. Simmons, B. P. Brown, Jr., \V.
A. Matheson and James Wilson,
aldermen. These are all good men,
and right now we put them on notice
that much will be expected of them.
This year will bean important one
in the history of Toccoa, ami the ac¬
tion of the council may prove a pow¬
erful factor in the progress of the
town. We hope so.
New Advertisements.
