The elections pro over, probably
for two vet» r ". • We hope so. Elec-
tions are demoralizing tilings, any-
wav. In the canvass that precedes
an election n good many men neg¬
lect their work to attend political
meetings, party feeling runs high,
through excitement cruel criticism is
indulged in and harsh accusations arc
made. Through political discussions
warm friends become bitter enemies,
and estiangemenls are caused be¬
tween fathers and sons.
Human nature is weak, and many
of us arc controlled too much by prej¬
udice. Some people are inclined to
like or dislike a man according to his
political belief This is a very fool¬
ish way to judge a man. That per¬
son who is conspicuous for integrity
and charity, who treats his fellow-
man fairly ar.d dumb animals hu¬
manely, whether he bo Democrat,
Republican, or Populist, Methodist,
Baptist, Presbyterian, Catholic or a
member of no church—that person is
entitled to respect and worthy of
friendship.
The unpleasant feelings engender¬
ed by the recent elections have not
entirely ceased to e~ist, and a3 long
as ridicule is resorttd to the old
wounds, ..hot heal. Through par¬
tisan zeal there is no doubt that both
sides said too many bitter things. If j
possible- these sho ild be forgotten. i
There doubtless People’s 1
are, in the
party some as upright and brave
men a-, the Democrats can boast of
We til!nk they arc on the wrong
track, but that need not influence j
our estimate of their individual j

“It is pleasant for brethren to
dwell together in unity. ’ and this is
possible even when people belong to
different political parties. Simply
avoid discordant topics.
’Twere better to be a successful
farmer than to be a fine political j
speaker: ’t.wero better to be a good |
neighbor t han to be an astute politi¬
cian. Hard times may abide with us,
but as long as white-winged Peace '
hovers ever our fair land we can!
manage to derive a good deal of j
pleasure while sojourning in what j
j,anc misanthropic person has desig -1
nted “ this vale of tears.” j
The average citizen hates taxes
like a moonshiner does a revenue
officer. While it comes a little hard 1
on us (?) rich folks to haul out our
shekels and bid them farewell as we
hand them over to Uncle Sam’s
agent, we should remember that we
are simply paying for the privilege
of living in a hind whore the protect-
ing arm of the law is extended to- I
wards us and our property. Heavy
taxes are frequently blessings very
much disguised.

Mr. J. .1. Howell, editor of the
Toccoa News, Toccoa, Ga., has
made many; improvements in that j
journal since lie took charge of it,
which add a great deal to its appear¬
ance. The News carries a number
«f paying advertisements, and seems
to be in a prosperous condition.—

IS Indiana the other day two
tneml>ers of a “white cap” gang were
sentenced to five years* imprisonment

If the price of meat continues long,
like the average girl, in the ‘‘teens,’’
it will be a case of “eat hog and die

The Americus Investment com-
pany, whose stock three years ago
was selling for 300, and the Cordele
Security company have passed into
the hands of a receiver.
The Australian ballot system has
been adopted in Alabama. This law

number of ignorant people, of whom
the negroes are in the majority.
Even when clouds of advereity are

be discerned. Some cheerful individ¬

ride bicycles can’t wear hoop skirts.
General G. T. Beauregard, the

large ones to be able to hold all the

have been dropped into said hands of

You can bet that a Southern man
will promptly resent being called a
liar, even in eongressionall halls,
This may not always bo politic, but
then Southern men are just built
that way.
Aaron Raphael, a young man
f rom Poston, committed suicide in
Atlanta a few days since. Hcbelong-

can be assigned for his rash act. He

A negro in Atlanta was sen¬
tenced to pay a fine of $15 the other
day for stealing a copv of the Con¬
stitution. This serves to show the
popularity of Georgia’s greatest pa¬
per. The people will have it if they
have to steal it.
