CONSERVATISM
T..K -.'r-v.. i" it,

n»,w knows r.,r two la.s- issues ex-
actly what conservatism means.” We
are jrlad r t:!!<,•». xi l 3 ’hk News is

the follow in * from its issue of March
10th
“It isgenentily believed by per pie
who ean read the si^ns of the times
that, for the next four year, the Dem¬
ouratic party will be on probation.
If il legislates so as tojrive the relief
from oppressive laws that ihe people
<i‘ maml, its perpetuation assured; if in it power fails
fra longtime is
do this its doom ts sealed. We
are living and hoping that all will
turn out well, but “weary’s the wait-
ting—weary.”
Those are our sentiments. This
is our conservatism. This is our
democracy, i lus our hope. Let’s
shake.
Tni. News also publishes a com-
inunication from “J. C.” on an article
-on “Grover The 1” in the Free Press
of March the 10th.
Whoever “ J. D,” i», he seems to
know me pretty well, and is right
about me not writing it, although 1
consented for it to go i.ito the paper
rather reluctantly as I thought it will a
little too highly spiced, but I
r.r.w take occasion to say tliat, al¬
though it was wiitien as irony, there
vks a good deal of truth mixed in it,
and it was not written under the in-
fluence of whiskey or opium, as“J.
D’s.” also communications generally are.
We find in the same issue of
The News, a communication from
“H. W. 11.” of Baltimore, in which
said correspondent refers “KING to a gamb¬
ling den as a part of GRO-
VEli’S” domain. So we are not
the only one who has printed it
“King Grover.” Those who live in
glass houses should not throw
stones.” J. VY. Holbrook.
Brother Holbrook is in error when
he presumes that we are profiting by
finding out, what he m cans by “con-
se r vatism” in politics. Such “con
servntistr.” as lie exhibits in allowing
i he- publication of calamity
against the lhmociatie parly and
scurrilous charges against President
Cleveland is certainly of no benefit
to us,'and we suspect that the Free
Pres* is not greatly profited thereby.
But Brother Holbrook quotes r.
paragraph from The News and says
it exactly expresses bis sentiments.
Some people have a queer way of ex-
pressing their sentiments.
Mr. Holbrook admits that be did

this U the natural outcome of ‘con

Foi: the benefit of the Atlanta
Constitution we note that in Greene
county a convict guard is charged
with causing the death of a neoro
who was in his squad, and is in jail.
Will the Constitution call this a
‘‘canard?”
Some of our exchanges are beoin-
oiiig to talk about gubernatorial
timber already. Give us a rest; we
have not entirely recovered from
that ‘‘tired feeling” resulting from
the recent political campaign. Let
politics alone for awhile.
Gejkgia is now without a state
geologist. The assistant geologists
sent in their resignations h-d week,
but Governor Northen had to ask
Dr. Spencer to resign, It is gen-
orally admitted that the work done
by these men was of little value.
Perhaps the state can dispense with
geologists for awhile.
The Hartwell Sun bears marks
of prosperity. Last week it appear.!
hi eight column form, and contained
in addition to its quota of good read -
ing matter many advertisements,
most of which are local ones. The
people of Hartwell seem to appre-
ciate the Sun, and the rajs of that
journal are widening and increasing
in brilliancy.
Joe James, of Douglasville, Wil¬
liam 1’. Gary, of Augusta, and Frank
Leverett, of Eatontor., have been
nominated by President Cleveland.
James gets the United States dis¬
trict. H’tornejship r.f the Northern
district of Georgia,Gary receives tlie
same oiliee for the Southern district
of the sta e, and Leverett will be
marshal of the Southern district. All
these are good men.
Near Fort Valley Saturday nigh)
a party of white caps made an attack
upon some negroes.® The latter fired
into the party and killed William
Ha.ch-r, » wild young man who he-
longed to a good family. Two

were captured. The coroner’s jur\
called the killing justifiable hoini
cide, and public sentiment approves

A CALL FOR THE RIGHT MAN
How often do we hear this call being made
for a young rea»'whose character is unstained,
nnaoiled by the uanv sins anderi's that are
so common m th? li».»t a id knowledge of
the nineteen th century—for a young man
whose oast life has ben above suspicion
and ... who ha* ,n->dc , a decision to 1 vc m *i.„ the
confidence of bis fellow-man and on a higher
plane and wth enough backbone and de-
and stand by tlietr at the cost o. his Lie;
the call is being made for Christian young

sinful di-si; ntions and follies *hat lead the
youth of our country into a reckless life.
A call for the i ight man is heard f-om pole
t) | o'e and 'he voice sounds along the age
like a rlpp'ing stream amid tnc mountain
gorge and repe ated from mountain crag to
mountain peak m eve;- multiplying and
r.ever ceasing re erberat’ons.
Yonng man, you can no longer hold or oc¬
cupy any business position tin Ies< you are
the right man. I mean by the right man
a Christian gentleman, one whose record is
not soiled by the sins and numerous dissipa-
ted habits that leave a stain that nothing but
the hand of God can er.ise—a young man
whose rank and dignity are so thorough 1 )’
fixed that the cyclone of sin and evil habits
cannot touch, much less jar, the moral
foundati»n of his principles.
The call goes to tae physician in liis office,
the lawyer behind the bar, the dignified old
judge in the stand, the npost’e in his chair,
the minister in his pulpit, the statesman in
his cabinet, the soldier in the field, the sailor
on the deck, the merchant behind the coun¬
ter, the teacher on tlie rostrum, the engineer
that holds the throttle, and the editor at the
press, and gently asks in a quiet whisper of
the morning biecze. yet in tones of reverbera-
ting and echoing thunder, “Are you the
right man?” It you cannot hold up a clean,
white sheet, of paper emblematical of your
character, then you mu-t be the serf of the
money lords of our country and never rise
any higher in the history of fame than lie
whose record is blacked, stained and blotted,
and who becomes a servant to the go.l of sin.
Whatever you are hunting for yon will find
that the vulture flies oyer the hillside, and
never gels a breath from the fresh scented
cxlor of the honeysuckle, but lights on the de¬
caying carcass, the height of his ambition
On the other hand, the butterfly never finds
the carcass, but gently extracts the momsng
dew and sweet scented odor from tlie pure
p.-tals and unsoiled bud of the ro-e and the
water {lily.
The young man who is seeking knowledge,
drinking from the pure crystal fountain of
truth and virtue, seeking to engrave his name

never drawn by that chan o. e.il mtlmnu.

in a pure moral, healthful atmosphere, “un¬
touched by sorrow, unsoiled by sin.”
But look at the young man whose ambition
does not soar higher^ than an evil thought
or a stone from an infant’s hand. Fee them

fame like th’rsty wolves at a stagnant p o
